Preview: UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at UC San Diego Tritons

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — A pivotal Big West Conference men’s basketball clash is set for Thursday night as the surging UC Santa Barbara Gauchos visit the UC San Diego Tritons at RIMAC Arena.

The Gauchos (13-7, 5-3 Big West) enter on a four-game winning streak, most recently edging Long Beach State 74-71 on the road Saturday. Guard Aidan Mahaney led the way with 21 points, continuing a strong stretch where he has averaged 17.3 points over his last seven contests. UCSB’s offense has been potent during the streak, averaging 83.3 points per game.

They face a Tritons squad (15-6, 5-3) looking to rebound after a narrow 61-59 home loss to UC Irvine last weekend. That defeat snapped a two-game win streak for UC San Diego, which has been strong at home with a 9-2 record in San Diego this season. Forward Tom Beattie, a key two-way contributor, will be central to the Tritons’ efforts to contain the Gauchos’ backcourt.

The matchup features two teams tied in the conference loss column, making it critical for postseason positioning. UCSB’s recent success has been fueled by efficient offense, while the Tritons have relied on a defense allowing just 66.2 points per game at home.

Historically, the series has been tightly contested since UC San Diego transitioned to Division I. The teams will meet again in the regular-season finale on March 7 in Santa Barbara.

Thursday’s winner will gain a valuable tiebreaker and momentum heading into the final month of conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
