Preview: UC Irvine Anteaters at UC San Diego Tritons
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — A pivotal Big West Conference men’s basketball matchup is set for Saturday at RIMAC Arena as the surging UC San Diego Tritons host the UC Irvine Anteaters.
The Tritons (15-5 overall) enter with momentum, having won eight of their last ten games. They are coming off an 80-74 road victory over UC Davis on Thursday, led by 19 points from guard Alex Chaikin. Chaikin has been a consistent offensive force, scoring in double figures in nine consecutive games, including a 22-point performance in a narrow loss to Cal State Northridge on Jan. 15.
The Anteaters (12-7) look to rebound after a tough 72-75 loss at UC Davis last Saturday, which snapped a three-game winning streak. Forward Kyle Evans, a key defensive presence, has been a steady contributor. Over his last five games, Evans has averaged 11.8 points and 5.4 rebounds, including a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds in a win at Cal State Bakersfield on New Year’s Day.
This contest features a contrast in recent trajectories. UC San Diego has solidified itself near the top of the conference standings with a balanced attack, while UC Irvine seeks to regain its footing on the road after the last-second defeat at Davis. The Anteaters’ defense, anchored by Evans’ rim protection, will be tested by a versatile Tritons offense.
The game marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the programs this season. They will meet again at UC Irvine on Feb. 21.
Saturday’s winner will gain crucial positioning in the tightly contested Big West race as the regular season approaches its midpoint. For UC San Diego, a victory would reinforce their status as a conference contender. For UC Irvine, it represents an opportunity to secure a quality road win and climb back toward the upper tier of the standings.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
