Bowling Green Routs Western Michigan in MAC Men’s Basketball
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Interstat) — The Bowling Green Falcons used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack to secure a decisive 72-54 road victory over the Western Michigan Broncos in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at University Arena.
Bowling Green, which improved to 13-6 overall, never trailed after the opening minute and steadily built its lead by forcing Western Michigan into a season of offensive frustration. The Falcons held the Broncos to just 23 points in the first half and 33.9% shooting for the game, while also forcing 14 turnovers which they converted into 18 points.
The most important stretch of the game came early in the second half, effectively extinguishing any hope of a Western Michigan rally. Leading 32-23 at halftime, the Falcons opened the second period with a 12-2 run over the first four minutes. The surge was fueled by stifling defense and efficient transition play. Javontae Campbell, who finished with 20 points and seven assists, ignited the run with a steal and assist on a Troy Glover alley-oop, followed by a Mayar Wol dunk. The burst pushed Bowling Green’s lead to 44-25, and Western Michigan never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Campbell, a 6-foot-2 guard from Muskogee, Oklahoma, orchestrated the Falcons’ offense throughout, adding three steals in 38 minutes. His backcourt partner, Sam Towns of Columbus, Ohio, led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting. The Falcons’ interior presence was anchored by Glover, a 6-foot-10 forward from Wheaton, Illinois, who contributed nine points, four blocks and three steals, controlling the paint defensively.
Western Michigan, which fell to 6-11, was led by Justice Williams of Philadelphia, who scored 18 points. However, the Broncos’ offense was crippled by a lack of ball movement, managing only three assists as a team against 14 turnovers. Bowling Green, by contrast, recorded 10 assists and committed only eight turnovers.
The Falcons shot 42.9% from the field and capitalized on their trips to the free-throw line, making 19 of 27 attempts. Western Michigan struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 6 of 26 three-point attempts. Bowling Green also won the battle in hustle categories, recording 10 steals and seven blocks.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 1,086. Bowling Green next travels to face Toledo on Saturday. Western Michigan will host Central Michigan on the same day.
The victory marked a return to form for Bowling Green following a loss to Akron in its previous conference game. The Falcons’ defense, which entered the game allowing an average of 72.3 points, delivered one of its most complete performances of the season, holding an opponent to a season-low in points and offensive efficiency.
Interstat’s ELO system had given Bowling Green a 54.3% probability to win, and the Falcons covered the pregame spread as a six-point favorite. The total score of 126 fell well under the over/under line of 157, a testament to the defensive nature of the contest.
