High Point at Charleston Southern

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging High Point team looks to continue its dominant start when it visits Charleston Southern in a Big South Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday.

The Panthers (15-3, 2-0 Big South) enter on an eight-game winning streak, including a 104-49 demolition of Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. High Point’s offense has been relentless, scoring 80 or more points in 14 games this season and averaging 98.5 points during its current streak.

High Point is led by guard Conrad Martinez, who is coming off a 22-point, six-assist performance against Gardner-Webb. Over his last five games, Martinez is averaging 14.2 points and 5.0 assists per contest.

Charleston Southern (11-7, 1-1) aims to bounce back after a narrow 81-77 road loss to Winthrop. The Buccaneers have shown potency, winning five of their last seven, thanks in large part to guard A’lahn Sumler. Sumler averages 20.2 points per game and has scored 22 or more in three of his last four outings, including a 29-point effort at Gardner-Webb.

The game at CSU Field House pits one of the league’s most explosive offenses against a Buccaneers squad capable of high-scoring outputs, as seen in a 113-point performance against North Florida last month. Charleston Southern will need to find an answer for High Point’s depth and tempo; the Panthers have won their two conference games by an average of 36 points.

Defensively, the Buccaneers must contend with a balanced High Point attack that saw Caden Miller add 14 points off the bench in the midweek win, while Vincent Brady contributed 11 points.

Saturday’s contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again in High Point, North Carolina, on Feb. 4.
