High Point Dominates Gardner-Webb in Conference Rout
HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — The disparity between the top and bottom of the Big South Conference was on full display Wednesday night at Qubein Arena, where the High Point Panthers delivered a commanding 104-49 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game.
From the opening tip, High Point established a level of intensity and execution that Gardner-Webb could not match. The Panthers raced to a 13-0 lead before the Runnin’ Bulldogs managed their first points, setting a tone of defensive dominance that would last the entire evening. High Point forced a staggering number of early turnovers and missed shots, converting them into easy transition opportunities that buried the visitors early.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably the first ten minutes, where High Point built an insurmountable lead. The Panthers’ defensive pressure was relentless, creating a cascade of Gardner-Webb mistakes—travels, steals, and blocked shots—that fueled a blistering offensive start. By the first media timeout, the outcome was effectively decided, allowing High Point to showcase its depth and offensive firepower in a stress-free environment for the remaining 30 minutes.
Conrad Martinez, High Point’s top star, led all scorers with 22 points in just 21 minutes, adding six assists. He spearheaded the first-half onslaught with a series of driving layups and three-pointers, demonstrating why he has been a central figure in the Panthers’ successful season. His backcourt mate, Rob Martin of St. Louis, contributed 12 points and four assists, while the frontcourt duo of Caden Miller (14 points) and Terry Anderson (13 points) provided efficient interior scoring.
Gardner-Webb, which fell to 2-16 overall and 0-2 in the Big South, was led by DJ Jefferson of Richardson, Texas, who scored 20 points and blocked three shots. Colin Hawkins of Colorado Springs, Colorado, added nine points and three assists, and Jacob Hogarth of Brooklyn, New York, finished with 11 points. The Runnin’ Bulldogs shot poorly from the field and committed 22 turnovers, which High Point converted into 34 points.
The Panthers led 53-13 at halftime, having held Gardner-Webb to a historically low scoring output for a half. The second half saw more of the same, with High Point’s bench maintaining the aggressive style. Vincent Brady of Indianapolis scored 11 points with two assists and a block, and Babacar Diallo of Dakar, Senegal, chipped in six points and three assists.
High Point improved to 15-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, continuing its strong start to the season. The Panthers shot 54% from the field and dished out 26 assists on 40 made baskets, a testament to their unselfish, attacking style. The announced attendance of 3,414 saw a team operating at peak efficiency.
Gardner-Webb’s struggles this season continued, as the team has now lost five straight games. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to regroup before hosting Radford on Jan. 14. High Point, which entered the game as a 27-point favorite and exceeded that margin with ease, will travel to face Charleston Southern on Saturday.
The game’s total points, 153, fell under the pregame over/under line of 165, largely due to Gardner-Webb’s anemic offensive performance. According to Interstat’s ELO system, High Point held a 98% probability to win, a projection that proved overwhelmingly accurate as the Panthers delivered a comprehensive performance from start to finish.
