Longwood at High Point
HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging High Point men’s basketball team, boasting one of the nation’s top records, will look to continue its dominant start when it hosts Longwood in a Big South Conference matchup Saturday at Qubein Arena.
The Panthers (13-3) enter conference play riding a wave of momentum, having won their last six games by an average margin of 46.2 points, though that streak includes four non-Division I opponents. Their most consequential recent victory was an 87-69 road win at UNC Asheville on Wednesday. High Point’s offense has been explosive, scoring 93 or more points in four of its last five games.
A key catalyst is junior guard Scotty Washington, who erupted for 26 points in just 20 minutes against Asheville. He leads a balanced Panthers attack that features four players averaging double figures.
They will face a Longwood squad (9-7) that has found its footing after a slow start, winning three of its last four games. The Lancers are coming off an 82-70 home victory over Winthrop on Wednesday. Forward Elijah Tucker has been a consistent force, averaging 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds over his last six contests. He nearly posted a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds in the Winthrop win.
This game marks the conference opener for both teams and will be a test of Longwood’s resilience on the road against the league’s current standard-bearer. High Point has been nearly unbeatable at home this season, while the Lancers have struggled away from Farmville, Virginia, with a 1-5 record in true road games.
The Panthers won both meetings last season. Saturday’s contest will be the first of a regular-season series, with the rematch scheduled for Jan. 31 at Longwood.
Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon at Qubein Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
