Notre Dame at California

BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging California team looks to rebound from its most lopsided loss of the season when it hosts Notre Dame in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Friday at Haas Pavilion.

The Golden Bears (12-2), whose only prior defeat was a three-point road loss to Kansas State, were routed 90-70 by Louisville at home on Tuesday. They will face a Fighting Irish squad (10-4) coming off a grinding 47-40 road win at Stanford that same night.

California’s offense, which averages 78.6 points per game, runs through guard Chris Bell. He scored 20 points in the loss to Louisville and is averaging 17.3 points over his last three contests. He will be a primary focus for a Notre Dame defense that has held its last two opponents under 60 points.

Notre Dame, which has won three of its last four, relies on a more methodical approach, averaging 71.6 points. Forward Garrett Sundra is a key contributor, coming off an 8-point, 2-assist performance in 31 minutes against Stanford. The Irish have shown resilience in close games, including an 87-85 overtime win at TCU earlier this month.

This game is organized by the Atlantic Coast Conference, though it is a nonconference contest for both teams. It begins a challenging stretch for California, which plays five of its next six on the road against ACC opponents. Notre Dame opens its ACC slate at home against Clemson on Jan. 10.

The matchup pits California’s high-scoring attack against Notre Dame’s recent defensive stoutness. The Golden Bears seek to re-establish their home-court advantage, where they are 9-1 this season, while the Fighting Irish aim to secure a second straight significant road win in California.
