Toreros Stun Favored Tritons in Crosstown Thriller
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectation, the San Diego Toreros edged the UC San Diego Tritons in a crosstown men’s NCAA Division I basketball thriller Friday night at RIMAC Arena, a result that defied both a massive pregame point spread and statistical probability.
The Toreros, installed as 14-point underdogs and given less than a two percent chance to win by one advanced metric system, escaped with an 82-80 victory in front of 2,711 fans. The win snapped a two-game skid for San Diego and handed the high-flying Tritons just their second loss of the season.
The game’s defining sequence, and its most important part, came in the frantic final 16 seconds. With UC San Diego leading 80-79, the Tritons’ Emanuel Prospere was fouled and went to the line for two shots with 16 seconds on the clock. Prospere, a guard from Miami, calmly sank both free throws to push the lead to three points.
San Diego, without a timeout to advance the ball, rushed upcourt. The ball found its way to star guard Ty-Laur Johnson, who launched a deep 3-pointer from well beyond the arc with just over five seconds remaining. The shot swished through the net, tying the game at 82 and sending a shock through the home crowd.
On the ensuing inbounds play, UC San Diego’s Hudson Mayes was called for a foul on Johnson, sending the Brooklyn native back to the line with a chance to take the lead with 13 seconds left. Johnson, who finished with a game-high 23 points and seven assists, sank the first free throw to put San Diego up by one. He missed the second, but a scramble for the rebound resulted in a held ball, with the possession arrow favoring the Toreros.
San Diego inbounded with just over four seconds left. Alejandro Aviles’ initial layup attempt was off the mark, but the forward from San Juan, Puerto Rico, grabbed his own miss and was fouled on the put-back attempt with 3.3 seconds remaining. Aviles missed the first free throw but made the second, extending the lead to 82-80.
UC San Diego’s final desperation heave from beyond half-court was off target, sealing a remarkable comeback victory for the visiting Toreros.
The game was a tale of two halves, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. San Diego dominated the opening period, leveraging a 12-of-33 performance from 3-point range and a 14-7 advantage in offensive rebounds to build a 40-31 halftime lead. The Toreros’ defense held the Tritons to just 31 points on 36% shooting in the first half.
UC San Diego stormed back in the second half, nearly erasing the deficit behind an explosive 49-point period. The Tritons shot 57% from the floor after halftime, led by center Bol Dengdit. The 6-foot-11 sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and added three blocks, fueling the rally that saw the Tritons briefly take the lead down the stretch.
For San Diego, Johnson’s backcourt mate, Toneari Lane of Atlanta, provided crucial scoring support with 17 points. Adrian McIntyre added nine points and three assists. The Toreros, despite shooting just 44.8% from the field overall, won the efficiency battle, posting an offensive rating of 120.2 points per 100 possessions compared to the Tritons’ 116.6.
UC San Diego was led by Dengdit’s 18 points and three blocks. Prospere finished with 11 points and six assists, while Tom Beattie of Auckland, New Zealand, scored 14 points. Hudson Mayes added 12 points off the bench.
The loss drops UC San Diego to 10-2 on the season, while San Diego improves to 5-6. The Toreros will look to build on the upset when they travel to face Washington on Monday. UC San Diego’s next contest is at home against Stanton on Dec. 28.
The combined score of 162 points fell under the pregame over/under line of 156.5.
