Tarleton State at Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The Cincinnati Bearcats look to rebound from a rare home loss when they host the surging Tarleton State Texans in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Monday at Fifth Third Arena.
Both teams enter the contest with 5-win records. Cincinnati (5-2) saw its five-game winning streak snapped in a 64-56 home loss to Eastern Michigan last Wednesday. The Bearcats, who had been dominant at home prior to the defeat, were led by Day Day Thomas’s 17 points in the loss.
Tarleton State (5-3) arrives in Ohio riding a three-game winning streak, most recently a 67-57 victory over Midwestern St. this past Friday. Jordan Mizell (14 points) and Camron McDowell (13 points) provided the offensive punch for the Texans in that contest.
The game presents a contrast in recent schedules. While the Texans’ win streak has come against a mix of Division I and Division II opponents, Cincinnati’s early slate has been exclusively against Division I competition. The Bearcats’ two losses came against Eastern Michigan and Louisville.
For Tarleton State, this game is another opportunity to test itself against a high-major program, following a 94-81 loss at Baylor and a 96-60 defeat at LSU earlier this season.
Cincinnati will rely on its backcourt of Thomas and Kerr Kriisa, who dished out six assists against Eastern Michigan, to ignite its offense. The Bearcats’ defense will aim to contain a Texans offense that has scored 76 or more points in five of its eight games.
Tipoff is set for Monday night. Cincinnati travels to face crosstown rival Xavier on Friday, while Tarleton State returns home to host Howard Payne on Wednesday.
