Bearcats Use Dominant Second Half to Remain Undefeated, Down Mountaineers

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a game defined by suffocating defense and a decisive second-half surge, the Cincinnati Bearcats remained undefeated Sunday, pulling away from the Mount Saint Mary’s Mountaineers for a 72-55 victory at a raucous Fifth Third Arena.

A crowd of 9,007 watched as the Bearcats, now 4-0, used their significant size and athleticism advantage to overcome a sluggish offensive start. The Mountaineers, who fell to 1-3, led for much of the first half behind hot three-point shooting but ultimately could not withstand Cincinnati’s relentless pressure.

The first half was a tale of contrasting styles. Mount Saint Mary’s found early success from beyond the arc, connecting on six of its first 14 three-point attempts. Guard Xavier Lipscomb was instrumental, scoring 11 of his team-high 14 points before the break, including three shots from deep. The Mountaineers built a lead that stretched to as many as six points and took a 36-30 advantage into the locker room.

Cincinnati, meanwhile, struggled to find its offensive rhythm, shooting just 32 percent from the floor in the opening period. However, the Bearcats stayed within striking distance by dominating the interior, outscoring the Mountaineers 18-8 in the paint and converting second-chance opportunities.

Any hope of a Mountaineer upset was extinguished in the second half as Cincinnati flipped the script entirely. The Bearcats opened the period on a blistering 16-2 run, completely stifling the Mount Saint Mary’s offense. The Mountaineers went scoreless for nearly five minutes and managed only 19 points in the entire second half, shooting a dismal 21 percent from the field after the break.

The Bearcats’ defensive intensity was the catalyst. They amassed eight steals and eight blocks, forcing Mount Saint Mary’s into 19 total turnovers. Cincinnati converted those miscues into 21 points, while the Mountaineers failed to score a single point off the Bearcats’ 10 turnovers. Cincinnati also dominated in transition, racking up 16 fastbreak points to zero for the visitors.

A dominant frontcourt performance powered the Cincinnati victory. Baba Miller, a 6-foot-11 forward from Mallorca, Spain, recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, adding four blocks and two steals. His presence in the paint was a constant deterrent. He was joined by 7-foot-2 center Moustapha Thiam of Dakar, Senegal, who also notched a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks. The duo anchored a defense that held Mount Saint Mary’s to just 18 points in the paint.

In the backcourt, guard Day Day Thomas provided a crucial scoring punch, leading all players with 16 points. The Bishopville, South Carolina, native added five rebounds and five assists, helping to steady the Bearcats’ offense when shots were not falling. Keyshuan Tillery provided a spark off the bench with nine points.

For Mount Saint Mary’s, the offensive struggles were comprehensive. Beyond Lipscomb’s 14 points and eight rebounds, the team received little consistent production. Luke McEldon of London, England, added nine points and six rebounds, but the Mountaineers shot a woeful 3 for 10 from the free-throw line and were outrebounded 48-38. Their offensive rating of 74.6 points per 100 possessions underscored the difficulty of scoring against Cincinnati’s stout defense.

The Bearcats improved their season record with a formula of defense and rebounding, overcoming their own shooting woes, which included a 6-for-29 performance from three-point range. The Mountaineers, who were coming off a win against Saint Francis (PA), will look to regroup on the road against Maryland on Wednesday. Cincinnati, which has also defeated Dayton, Georgia State, and Western Carolina this season, will host Louisville on Friday.
