West Virginia Uses Defense, Free Throws to Pull Away From Mount Saint Mary’s

STAR CITY, W.Va. (Interstat) — In a season-opening clash of Mountaineers on Tuesday night, the West Virginia men’s basketball team used a relentless defensive effort to pull away from Mount Saint Mary’s for a 70-54 victory before a crowd of 10,081 at the WVU Coliseum.

The game was ultimately decided by West Virginia’s ability to capitalize on mistakes. The home squad forced 18 turnovers and converted them into 25 points, while also outscoring the visitors 19-6 in fastbreak opportunities. This defensive pressure, combined with a significant advantage at the free-throw line, allowed West Virginia to maintain control throughout the contest despite inconsistent shooting from the field.

Jasper Floyd was the catalyst for West Virginia, delivering a game-high 25 points. He was efficient from the floor and aggressive in attacking the basket, supplementing his scoring with four assists and a disruptive presence on defense. His backcourt mate, Honor Huff, provided crucial support with 16 points, including several key three-pointers that helped stretch the lead.

The interior was commanded by Brenen Lorient, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. His work on the glass and defensive presence, which included a block, were instrumental in limiting second-chance opportunities for Mount Saint Mary’s. Harlan Obioha and DJ Thomas provided valuable minutes off the bench, contributing 5 and 7 points, respectively, as part of a balanced West Virginia attack.

For Mount Saint Mary’s, the offensive struggles were pronounced. The team posted an offensive rating of just 78.2 points per 100 possessions, a figure that underscored their difficulties in generating clean looks and taking care of the basketball. Trey Deveaux led the scoring effort with 15 points and six rebounds, while Xavier Lipscomb filled the stat sheet with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Mason So also chipped in 8 points and 7 rebounds in the losing effort.

The game began at a frantic pace defined by turnovers and fouls. West Virginia’s pressure was evident from the opening tip, leading to several early miscues by the visiting Mountaineers. Floyd announced his presence with a jump shot and a three-pointer in the game’s first two minutes, quickly establishing the tempo. Mount Saint Mary’s managed to stay within striking distance in the first half, largely through the efforts of Deveaux and Lipscomb, who worked to find seams in the West Virginia defense.

A key sequence late in the first half illustrated the game’s theme. After a Lipscomb layup brought Mount Saint Mary’s to within 29-25, West Virginia closed the period on a 6-2 run. The surge was capped by a trio of free throws from Huff after he was fouled on a three-point attempt, sending the teams to the locker room with West Virginia leading 35-29.

Any hopes of a Mount Saint Mary’s comeback were quickly extinguished in the second half as West Virginia methodically increased its lead. The home team began the period with a 5-0 spurt, forcing a timeout from the frustrated visitors. The defensive intensity never wavered, with West Virginia consistently turning defensive stops into transition opportunities. A Morris Ugusuk three-pointer followed by another from Huff pushed the lead to 47-41, forcing another Mount Saint Mary’s timeout as the game began to slip away.

Mount Saint Mary’s could never mount a sustained offensive run to seriously threaten the lead in the final ten minutes. West Virginia continued to attack the basket, drawing fouls and marching to the free-throw line, where they attempted 35 shots compared to just 19 for their opponents. Floyd and Lorient continued to connect on timely baskets, and Huff’s free throws in the final minute sealed the 70-54 final score.

With the win, West Virginia begins its season 1-0 and will look to build on this defensive performance when it hosts Campbell on Thursday. Mount Saint Mary’s falls to 0-1 and will seek its first win of the campaign on Friday at home against Bucknell.
