Oakland Rides Defense, Robinson’s Playmaking to Road Win Over IU Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — Brody Robinson orchestrated a dominant performance with 19 points and 13 assists, and the Oakland Golden Grizzlies used a stifling defensive effort to avenge an earlier loss with an 86-74 victory over the IU Indy Jaguars in a Horizon League men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Fairgrounds Coliseum.

The most important part of the game was Oakland’s immediate and sustained defensive pressure, which created a first-half cushion the Jaguars could never overcome. The Golden Grizzlies forced 14 turnovers, converting them into 21 points, and held IU Indy to just 33 points in the opening period. Oakland set the tone from the opening tip, with Ziare Wells stealing the ball on IU Indy’s first possession, leading to a Robinson three-pointer just 44 seconds into the game. That sequence sparked a 15-5 run over the first five minutes, and the Jaguars spent the rest of the night fighting uphill.

Robinson, a 5-foot-11 guard from Houston, controlled the tempo throughout, adding three steals to his double-double. His playmaking fueled a balanced Oakland attack where four players scored in double figures. Tuburu Naivalurua, a 6-foot-6 forward from Sydney, Australia, provided a strong interior presence with 16 points, while Wells added 14 and Warren Marshall chipped in 12.

Despite the early deficit, IU Indy found a rhythm from beyond the arc, hitting 12 of 28 three-point attempts. Maguire Mitchell led all scorers with 25 points for the Jaguars, connecting on 5 of 11 from deep. Kyler D’Augustino added 14 points and Finley Woodward dished out nine assists. However, the Jaguars’ offense was hampered by Oakland’s ball-hawking defense, which recorded 13 steals, and by a stark disparity in assists. Oakland tallied 13 assists on 34 made field goals, while IU Indy managed only three assists on 29 baskets.

The Golden Grizzlies also dominated inside, outscoring IU Indy 52-26 in the paint and holding a 15-7 edge in second-chance points. Oakland shot 54.8 percent from the floor compared to IU Indy’s 47.5 percent, and while the Jaguars were more efficient from three-point range, they attempted only 10 free throws, making four. Oakland went to the line 22 times, making 14.

After taking a 43-33 lead into halftime, Oakland saw its advantage cut to nine points early in the second half. But the Golden Grizzlies responded with a 10-2 spurt, capped by a Robinson-assisted layup from Brett White, to push the lead back to 17 and effectively seal the game with just over 17 minutes remaining. IU Indy never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

The victory improved Oakland’s record to 16-14 overall and marked a measure of revenge for a 103-85 loss to the Jaguars just over a month ago on Jan. 21. IU Indy, which was coming off a close loss to Wright State, fell to 7-23. An announced crowd of 617 watched the game.

Robinson’s performance continued a strong stretch for the junior guard, who is averaging 17.4 points and 7.6 assists over his last five games. Oakland will look to build momentum when it hosts Detroit on Saturday. IU Indy will aim to regroup at home against Purdue Fort Wayne, also on Saturday.

The game was a clear demonstration of Oakland’s defensive game plan executed to near perfection in the first half, creating a margin that allowed them to withstand IU Indy’s perimeter shooting and cruise to a double-digit conference road win.
