IU Indy Stuns Oakland in High-Scoring Horizon League Upset
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of both form and expectation, the IU Indy Jaguars authored a commanding wire-to-wire victory, defeating the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 103-85 in a Horizon League men’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Athletics Center O’rena.
The Jaguars, entering with a 5-16 record and projected by advanced metrics to have less than a 3% chance of victory, delivered a near-flawless offensive performance to snap a two-game skid and hand Oakland just its second home loss of the conference season. The win improved IU Indy to 6-16 overall, while Oakland fell to 11-10.
The most critical phase of the contest was its inception. IU Indy established immediate and total control, silencing the home crowd of 2,233 with a blistering start. The Jaguars scored on their first four possessions, beginning with a Finley Woodward layup just 18 seconds in. A quick 7-0 run, capped by a Kyler D’Augustino three-pointer, forced an early Oakland timeout less than two minutes into the game. This explosive opening set a tone of confidence for the visitors and palpable frustration for the Golden Grizzlies, who spent the entire night chasing a deficit that only grew.
IU Indy’s offensive execution was historically efficient. The Jaguars shot 60% from the field, connecting on 45 of 75 attempts, and were equally potent from beyond the arc, making 11 of 22 three-pointers. Their offensive rating of 142.2 points per 100 possessions underscored an attack that found high-percentage shots at will, particularly in the paint where they outscored Oakland 62-36.
Woodward, a 6-foot-7 guard from Bristol, England, was the orchestrator of the masterpiece. He finished with 22 points and a career-high nine assists, repeatedly breaking down the Oakland defense to create opportunities for himself and others. His backcourt partner, D’Augustino, added 21 points and seven assists, while Jaxon Edwards provided relentless interior energy with 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting, many coming on emphatic dunks. Micah Davis chipped in 15 points and Maguire Mitchell had 13.
Oakland, by contrast, struggled to find consistent offense outside of Isaac Garrett, who led the Golden Grizzlies with 18 points. Point guard Brody Robinson managed a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists, but the team shot just 46.7% from the field and a costly 19 of 30 from the free-throw line. Their 114.5 offensive rating, while solid, was no match for the Jaguars’ incendiary output.
The Jaguars led 54-44 at halftime and never allowed Oakland to mount a serious threat in the second period. Any momentum shift was quickly snuffed out by an IU Indy basket, often from Woodward or Edwards. A 9-2 spurt by the Golden Grizzlies midway through the half cut the lead to 66-59, but Davis answered with a three-pointer on the next possession, and the margin ballooned back to 20 points within six minutes, effectively sealing the outcome.
Defensively, IU Indy, despite registering only four steals, used its size and positioning to contest shots and limit Oakland to one-and-done possessions, winning the rebounding battle 38-28 and grabbing 14 offensive boards.
The victory marks a significant high point in an otherwise difficult season for the Jaguars, showcasing their potential when their offensive weapons are synchronized. For Oakland, the loss represents a surprising stumble at home as they look to stay in the upper tier of the Horizon League standings.
IU Indy next hosts Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday. Oakland travels to face Detroit on Saturday.
