Abilene Christian at California Baptist
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference rematch with postseason implications is set for Thursday when the California Baptist Lancers host the Abilene Christian Wildcats at CBU Events Center.
The Lancers (21-8, 12-6 WAC), firmly in the hunt for a top conference tournament seed, aim to complete a regular-season sweep of the Wildcats. California Baptist edged Abilene Christian 65-63 on Feb. 7 in Riverside and won 74-58 in Abilene on Jan. 15.
California Baptist enters on a high note after an 82-67 victory over Tarleton State on Saturday. The Lancers are powered by guard Dominique Daniels, who is averaging 24.4 points over his last five games. He scored 21 points with five assists in the first meeting against Abilene Christian this season.
The Wildcats (13-16, 8-10) look to snap a two-game skid and play spoiler on the road. They are coming off a 74-67 loss at Utah Valley, where Christian Alston led the team with 18 points. Guard Rich Smith, a key facilitator for Abilene Christian, is averaging 7.6 assists over his last three contests. Smith had eight points and three assists in the narrow loss at California Baptist last month.
The Lancers’ defense, which held Abilene Christian to 37% shooting in the February matchup, will again be tested. California Baptist has won eight of its last ten games, while the Wildcats have struggled on the road with a 3-9 record away from home this season.
A win would bolster California Baptist’s standing ahead of the WAC tournament, while Abilene Christian seeks a momentum-building victory to close its regular season.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
