Lindenwood Routs Western Illinois in OVC Matchup
MACOMB, Ill. (Interstat) — An explosive first-half offensive display and a dominant defensive effort propelled the Lindenwood Lions to a decisive 91-69 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Western Hall.
The Lions seized control from the opening tip, building a commanding 22-point halftime lead they would never relinquish. Lindenwood shot 51.4 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on 18 of 35 attempts, while its defense stifled Western Illinois into 28.6 percent shooting and forced eight turnovers before the break. The 50-28 halftime score effectively decided the contest, as the Lions’ lead never dipped below 18 points in the second half.
Lindenwood’s offensive efficiency was the story. The Lions scored 91 points on 71 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 127.9. They outshot the Leathernecks overall, making 37 of 72 field goal attempts compared to Western Illinois’s 23 of 56. The Lions also dominated the glass with a 14-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to 18 second-chance points, and their defense generated 12 turnovers while committing only six.
Anias Futrell led all scorers with 21 points for Lindenwood, adding two blocks and two steals in a strong two-way performance. Dontrez Williams provided 19 points, and Clayton Jackson came off the bench to score 13, all in the second half. Jadis Jones added 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Lions, who improved to 17-14 overall.
Western Illinois, which fell to 5-26, was led by Danny Stephens with 18 points. Antwaun Massey contributed 15 points and three assists, while Francis Okwuosah chipped in 10 points. The Leathernecks struggled to find any consistent rhythm, finishing with just three assists as a team against 12 turnovers.
The most critical phase of the game was a 17-4 Lindenwood run midway through the first half that broke open a close contest. With the Lions leading 17-11, they unleashed a barrage of transition baskets and defensive stops. The surge included a driving layup by Dontrez Williams, a three-pointer from Anias Futrell, and a steal and dunk by Williams, forcing a Western Illinois timeout with 9:04 remaining and the Lions ahead 34-15. The Leathernecks could not recover from that deficit.
Lindenwood maintained its intensity after halftime, answering every Western Illinois push. When the Leathernecks cut the lead to 38-28 early in the second half, the Lions responded with a 9-2 spurt, capped by another Futrell three-pointer, to restore a 47-30 advantage and extinguish any hope of a comeback.
The Lions’ depth was also a factor, as their bench outscored Western Illinois’s reserves 28-11. Lindenwood also protected the paint, recording five blocks and altering numerous other shots.
The game was a reversal of recent form for Lindenwood, which had lost three of its last four contests, including a narrow home loss to Eastern Illinois just two days prior. For Western Illinois, the loss extended a difficult season, marking their 10th defeat in the last 11 games.
An announced crowd of 781 at Western Hall saw the Lions sweep the season series, having also defeated the Leathernecks 92-76 on Dec. 18 in St. Charles, Missouri.
