Mississippi at Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — Two Southeastern Conference men’s basketball teams looking to halt slides will meet Saturday when the Auburn Tigers host the Mississippi Rebels at Auburn Arena.
Auburn (15-13) has lost four of its last five games, most recently a 91-79 defeat at Oklahoma on Tuesday. The Tigers’ lone win in that stretch was a narrow 75-74 home victory over Kentucky on Feb. 21.
Mississippi (11-17) is in the midst of a more prolonged downturn, having lost nine consecutive games. The Rebels are coming off a heartbreaking 106-99 double-overtime loss to LSU on Wednesday, a game in which they squandered a late lead.
The Tigers won the first meeting this season, 78-66, in Oxford on Jan. 20.
A key matchup will feature two of the league’s top scorers. Auburn will lean on guard Keyshawn Hall, who is averaging 21.4 points over his last five games. He scored 26 in the loss at Oklahoma.
Mississippi will counter with guard Ilias Kamardine, who is coming off a career performance. In the double-overtime loss to LSU, Kamardine played 47 minutes and recorded 26 points and 10 assists. Over his last three games, he is averaging 17.3 points and 5.0 assists.
For Auburn, consistency has been an issue. Beyond Hall, guard Kevin Overton also scored 26 points against Oklahoma, but the Tigers’ defense has allowed 88.5 points per game during their 1-4 stretch.
Mississippi’s struggles are rooted in both defense and late-game execution. During their nine-game skid, the Rebels have allowed an average of 86.2 points. Their last three losses have been by a combined 13 points, including the double-overtime defeat.
Auburn will aim to protect its home court, where it is 11-4 this season. Mississippi is just 1-9 in true road games.
The game is the regular-season finale for both teams before the SEC tournament. Auburn will host LSU on Tuesday before traveling to Alabama next Saturday. Mississippi concludes its season at home against South Carolina next Saturday.
