Noard’s 30 Points Lead Cornell Past Brown in Ivy League Matchup

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive runs and a decisive advantage at the free-throw line, the Cornell men’s basketball team held off a persistent Brown squad for an 86-80 victory in Ivy League play on Saturday night at Newman Arena.

A season-high 30 points from junior guard Cooper Noard, including four crucial free throws in the final 19 seconds, propelled the Big Red to its second consecutive win in front of 1,944 fans. The victory improved Cornell’s record to 14-12 overall, while Brown fell to 8-17.

The most critical phase of the contest occurred late in the first half, transforming what had been a tight battle into a cushion Cornell would rely upon after halftime. With just over nine minutes remaining before the break and Brown holding a 22-20 lead, the Big Red unleashed a devastating 22-5 run over the next six minutes. Noard was the catalyst, scoring 11 points during the surge, including three three-pointers. Jacob Beccles added five points and two assists, and Jake Fiegen capped the run with a three-pointer, giving Cornell a commanding 42-27 advantage.

Brown, led by Landon Lewis’s 20 points and Adrian Uchidiuno’s 16, refused to capitulate. The Bears chipped away, closing the first half on an 18-4 run of their own, fueled by Lewis’s interior scoring and a three-pointer from Uchidiuno. The frantic close sent the teams to the locker rooms with Cornell’s lead trimmed to just one point at 46-45.

The second half settled into a tense back-and-forth affair, featuring 10 lead changes and five ties. Brown consistently attacked the paint, finishing with a 44-24 advantage in that category, and briefly held a four-point lead at 66-62 following an Uchidiuno three-pointer with 10:41 remaining.

Cornell responded with its signature weapon: the three-point shot. The Big Red connected on 13 of 35 attempts from beyond the arc, compared to Brown’s 8 of 23. A key sequence saw Beccles, who finished with 17 points and five assists, hit consecutive three-pointers to swing momentum back to the home team, putting Cornell ahead 74-71 with just over six minutes to play.

The final minutes were a war of attrition decided at the charity stripe. While Brown struggled to generate consistent stops without fouling, Cornell capitalized with remarkable efficiency. The Big Red made 23 of 27 free throws, an 85.2% clip, while Brown attempted only 14, making 10. Noard’s driving ability and Beccles’s craftiness drew repeated fouls in the bonus, allowing Cornell to score its final 12 points from the free-throw line.

Brown had several opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final two minutes. Trailing 80-78, the Bears forced a Cornell turnover and had a clean look for Luke Paragon from three-point range, but the shot missed. After two Noard free throws extended the lead to four, Brown’s Landon Lewis answered with a layup to make it 82-80 with eight seconds left. Needing a stop, Brown fouled Noard immediately on the inbound, and the junior guard calmly sank both free throws to seal the outcome.

Statistically, the game was remarkably even in several categories. Both teams finished with eight assists, eight steals, three blocks, and a similar number of turnovers. Cornell’s superior three-point shooting and overwhelming edge in free-throw attempts and makes proved to be the ultimate difference. Jake Fiegen supported Noard and Beccles with 16 points for Cornell. For Brown, Paragon added 11 points, but the Bears’ comeback effort fell just short against a Cornell team that executed more efficiently in the closing moments.

The result completed a regular-season sweep for Cornell over Brown, following a 22-point win in Providence in January. Brown will look to regroup before hosting Penn next Friday. Cornell hits the road to face Dartmouth next Saturday as both teams continue their Ivy League schedules.
