Bethune-Cookman Holds Off Grambling Rally for 76‑71 Road Win in SWAC Contest

GRAMBLING, La. (Interstat) — In a tense Southwestern Athletic Conference clash that came down to the final possession, Bethune-Cookman held off a late Grambling rally to secure a 76-71 victory on Thursday night at Fredrick Hobdy Assembly Center.

The Wildcats, who led for nearly the entire game, saw a 13-point second-half advantage whittled down to a single point in the final minute before making the necessary plays to escape. The win improved Bethune-Cookman to 16-13 overall, while Grambling fell to 12-16.

Bethune-Cookman’s Jakobi Heady, a 6-foot-6 guard from Chicago, delivered a game-high 20 points, including several critical baskets to stem Grambling runs. He added three assists and a block while playing all 40 minutes. His backcourt mate, Arterio Morris of Dallas, provided a crucial spark off the bench with 15 points, and forward Daniel Rouzan of Las Vegas also chipped in 15 points.

Grambling was led by the dynamic scoring of Derrius Ward, a 6-foot-6 guard from Philadelphia who poured in 24 points. Roderick Coffee of Painesville, Ohio, facilitated the Tigers’ offense with 18 points and a game-high six assists.

The most pivotal sequence unfolded in the game’s closing seconds. With Bethune-Cookman clinging to a 73-71 lead, the Wildcats missed a jumper, but Quentin Heady secured an offensive rebound. His follow attempt also missed, and Grambling’s Roderick Coffee grabbed the defensive board with 26 seconds left, giving the Tigers a chance to tie or take the lead.

Grambling called a timeout to set up a play. Out of the break, Jimel Lane’s driving layup attempt was off the mark. Rickey Ballard and Devyn Franklin each had point-blank offensive rebound attempts, but neither could convert. Franklin was ultimately ruled out of bounds on the scramble, turning the ball over to Bethune-Cookman with just 14 seconds remaining.

After a Wildcats timeout, they successfully inbounded to Quentin Heady, who drove for a layup to extend the lead to 75-71 with eight seconds left. Grambling’s last-gasp three-point attempt by Ward was off target, and Bethune-Cookman secured the rebound and the victory.

The game was a tale of two halves defined by runs. Bethune-Cookman started strong, building an early lead behind Heady’s shooting. Grambling responded with a 13-2 surge midway through the first half, fueled by Ward and Coffee, to take a 25-17 lead. The Wildcats weathered the storm and closed the half on a 16-11 run to trim Grambling’s halftime lead to 36-33.

The second half belonged to Bethune-Cookman early, as they opened with a 12-4 burst to reclaim the lead. They gradually built their advantage to 64-51 with just over seven minutes to play. Grambling refused to fade, mounting a 16-5 run over the next five minutes, capped by a Lane layup with 2:54 remaining, to pull within 69-67. The Tigers kept the pressure on until the final, frantic possessions.

Bethune-Cookman’s ability to control the interior was a key factor, outscoring Grambling 52-38 in the paint. The Wildcats also capitalized on 15 Grambling turnovers, converting them into 19 points. Ariel Bland, a 6-foot-7 forward from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, was instrumental as a distributor, dishing out seven assists.

The game was a rematch of a Jan. 10 contest won by Bethune-Cookman, 74-65. The Wildcats have now won four of their last five games. Grambling, which had won two of its last three entering the night, was led defensively by two blocks each from Ward and Franklin.

An announced crowd of 1,015 watched the contest, which exceeded the pregame point total projection. Bethune-Cookman will look to continue its momentum on the road at Southern on Saturday. Grambling will aim to rebound at home against Florida A&M the same day.
