Coppin State Edges North Carolina Central in Defensive Struggle

DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined more by grit than grace, the Coppin State Eagles edged the North Carolina Central Eagles 58-56 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at a packed McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.

The contest, played before 2,731 fans on Valentine’s Day, saw Coppin State overcome a six-point halftime deficit by clamping down defensively in the second half, holding the host Eagles to just 23 points after the break. The victory improved Coppin State to 5-20 overall, while North Carolina Central fell to 9-14.

The game’s pivotal sequence unfolded in the final minute with the score knotted at 56. After North Carolina Central’s Gage Lattimore missed a step-back three-pointer with 44 seconds left, Coppin State worked the clock. Camaren Sparrow’s jump shot with 33 seconds remaining was off the mark, but the visiting Eagles got a crucial stop on the ensuing possession. North Carolina Central’s Kelechi Okworogwo attempted a dunk that was blocked by Sparrow with 42 seconds left, and Coppin State secured the defensive rebound.

Following a timeout, Coppin State’s Hussain Williams missed a three-pointer, but North Carolina Central could not corral the rebound cleanly, and the ball went out of bounds to the visitors with 6.6 seconds left. Coppin State inbounded successfully and ran out the clock to secure the narrow road victory, avenging a 77-88 home loss to North Carolina Central just over a month prior.

The game was a stark contrast in halves. North Carolina Central, led by Lattimore’s aggressive first-half scoring, built a 33-27 lead by intermission. Lattimore finished with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Dionte Johnson added 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the hosts, while Kyric Davis chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

Coppin State’s comeback was fueled by balanced scoring and a formidable interior defense that racked up nine blocks. Sparrow, a guard from Baltimore, led Coppin State with 12 points off the bench. Demariontay Hall added 11 points in just 15 minutes, and Hussain Williams contributed nine points, three rebounds and two assists.

The statistical sheet underscored a game of poor shooting and relentless defense. Both teams shot under 35% from the field. Coppin State finished at 39.7% on 23-of-58 shooting, while North Carolina Central managed just 34.4% on 22-of-64. From three-point range, the teams combined to shoot 14-of-53. Coppin State’s advantage came inside, outscoring North Carolina Central 32-24 in the paint, and from the free-throw line, where they made 6-of-12 attempts compared to the hosts’ 4-of-9.

Coppin State’s offense was notably disjointed, registering only three assists against nine turnovers. North Carolina Central was only slightly better with six assists and nine turnovers. The home Eagles won the battle on the offensive glass 12-7 and generated 13 points off turnovers to Coppin State’s five, but could not overcome their frigid second-half shooting.

The result defied pregame expectations, as North Carolina Central was installed as an 11.5-point favorite and statistical models gave them an 86% probability of victory. The combined point total of 114 fell far under the over/under line of 144, highlighting the defensive nature of the contest.

For Coppin State, the win marked a second victory in three games following a prolonged losing streak. North Carolina Central, meanwhile, saw a two-game conference win streak snapped and continued to search for consistency in a season of narrow results.

Coppin State travels to face South Carolina State on Monday. North Carolina Central will host Morgan State, also on Monday.
