Hubbard Leads Mississippi State to Road Win Over Rival Mississippi
OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant first-half performance and a furious second-half rally that ultimately fell short, the Mississippi State Bulldogs defeated the Mississippi Rebels 90-78 in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at The Pavilion at Ole Miss.
The visiting Bulldogs, led by a scintillating 32-point effort from guard Josh Hubbard, seized control from the opening tip and built a 19-point halftime lead before withstanding a relentless offensive surge from the Rebels after intermission.
Mississippi State established its authority early, opening the game on a 13-0 run. Achor Achor, the 6-foot-9 forward from Melbourne, Australia, was instrumental in the opening blitz, scoring nine of those points, including a three-pointer and a layup. The Bulldogs’ defensive intensity stifled Mississippi, forcing difficult shots and turnovers. The Rebels did not score until the 17:53 mark of the first half on a three-pointer by Eduardo Klafke.
The Bulldogs’ lead ballooned as Hubbard found his rhythm. The sophomore from Madison, Mississippi, scored 18 of his points in the first half, connecting on a variety of pull-up jumpers and three-pointers. His stepback three-pointer with 3:34 left in the half pushed the lead to 43-20. Mississippi State’s ball movement was crisp, resulting in open looks, while their interior defense, anchored by Quincy Ballard’s three first-half blocks, frustrated Mississippi’s drives.
At halftime, the Bulldogs led 47-28, having held the Rebels to just 28 points on a struggling offensive night. The 19-point cushion seemed commanding, but the second half transformed into a track meet.
The most important part of the game was Mississippi’s dramatic second-half offensive explosion, which turned a potential blowout into a tense, high-scoring affair. The Rebels, led by the powerful inside-outside combination of Malik Dia and AJ Storr, completely flipped the script. Dia, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound forward from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, scored 24 of his game-high 32 points after halftime. He was a force in the paint, drawing fouls and finishing through contact, while also stepping out to hit a three-pointer.
Storr, a 6-foot-7 wing from Rockford, Illinois, provided the perimeter punch, scoring 19 of his 21 points in the second half. His driving layups and three-point shooting fueled the comeback. The Rebels’ pace increased dramatically, generating 16 fastbreak points for the game, most in the second period. A three-pointer by Ilias Kamardine of Marseille, France, cut the deficit to 60-50 with 13:36 remaining, sending a charge through the home crowd of 8,476.
Mississippi continued to chip away. A driving layup by Dia followed by a Patton Pinkins three-pointer brought the Rebels within seven points at 67-60 with just over four minutes to play. The Bulldogs, who had seen their lead dwindle under double digits for the first time since early in the game, faced mounting pressure.
However, each time Mississippi made a critical push, Mississippi State had an answer, primarily through Hubbard and Achor. After the Pinkins three, Hubbard immediately responded with a three-pointer of his own. When Dia answered with a three to make it 73-70, Achor was fouled and calmly sank two free throws. Hubbard then delivered the decisive blow, stealing a pass and finishing with a thunderous dunk in transition off a feed from Ja’Borri McGhee to extend the lead back to 77-70 with 2:32 left, effectively halting the Rebel momentum.
Achor finished with 18 points and seven rebounds for Mississippi State. Jayden Epps added 12 points. For Mississippi, Kamardine contributed five points and five assists, while Klafke had six points and four assists.
The victory improved Mississippi State’s season record to 10-13 overall. The loss dropped Mississippi to 11-14. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Mississippi had entered the game with a 69.1% probability to win. The Bulldogs avenged a 68-67 home loss to the Rebels just four weeks prior on Jan. 17.
Mississippi State returns to action Wednesday at home against Auburn. Mississippi travels to face Texas A&M on Wednesday.
