Cal State Bakersfield at Cal State Fullerton
Struggling Big West Teams Collide as Fullerton Hosts Bakersfield
FULLERTON, Calif. (Interstat) — Two men’s basketball teams seeking to reverse recent slides will meet Saturday when Cal State Fullerton hosts Cal State Bakersfield in a Big West Conference matchup at Titan Gymnasium.
The Titans (10-13 overall) and Roadrunners (8-15) enter the 7 p.m. PST tipoff on parallel losing streaks, each having dropped their last two games. Both squads are looking to gain traction in the conference standings as the regular season enters its final month.
Cal State Fullerton aims to defend its home court after a 83-69 road loss at UC Santa Barbara last Saturday. In that game, guard Kiwane Garris provided a bright spot, scoring 18 points in just 13 minutes off the bench. Garris’s efficient scoring outburst marked a season-high and he will be a player to watch for the Titans. Prior to its current two-game skid, Fullerton had won three of four, including a decisive 71-61 home victory over Long Beach State on Jan. 22.
Cal State Bakersfield arrives mired in a deeper slump, having lost six consecutive games. The Roadrunners are coming off an 80-72 home loss to UC Davis, also on Jan. 31. In that contest, guard Mike Price led the way with 24 points. Price has been a consistent offensive threat during the losing streak, averaging 17.8 points over his last five games where he played significant minutes, including a 24-point performance against UC Davis. Support from players like Dailin Smith, who added 19 points against the Aggies, will be crucial for Bakersfield to break its drought.
The Titans have shown more potency at home this season, notably in their 95-point outing against UC Santa Barbara on New Year’s Day. The Roadrunners, conversely, have found wins hard to come by on the road, with their last away victory dating back to Jan. 3 at UC Davis.
Historically, this series has been closely contested, adding another layer to Saturday’s game. The teams will meet again in Bakersfield just one week later on Feb. 21.
With both programs hovering below .500, the matchup represents a critical opportunity to build momentum before the upcoming Big West tournament. The Titans will look to leverage their home-court advantage, while the Roadrunners are desperate to snap a skid that has stretched over nearly a month.
