Mississippi at Texas
AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas Longhorns look to solidify their NCAA tournament resume when they host the struggling Mississippi Rebels in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center.
Texas (14-9) enters on a two-game winning streak after an 84-75 victory over South Carolina on Tuesday. The Longhorns have been powered by the stellar play of guard Dailyn Swain, who is averaging 22.0 points over his last three games. In the win over the Gamecocks, Swain scored 22 points in 37 minutes. His recent surge includes a 30-point performance at Auburn and an 18-point, 10-rebound, 6-assist effort in a road win at Oklahoma.
Mississippi (11-11) seeks to halt a four-game skid, most recently an 84-66 loss at Tennessee on Tuesday. The Rebels have lost six of their last eight after a 3-0 start to SEC play. Guard Patton Pinkins has been a bright spot, leading the team with 15 points in the loss to the Volunteers. He is averaging 12.4 points over his last five contests, including an 18-point outing in a double-overtime win at Georgia.
The Longhorns hold a distinct advantage in conference play, sitting at 7-4 in the SEC compared to the Rebels’ 4-7 mark. Texas also boasts a strong home record, having won three straight in Austin since a narrow loss to Texas A&M on Jan. 17.
For Mississippi, reversing its fortunes will require improved consistency, particularly on the road where it has lost three straight. Containing Swain will be a primary defensive challenge for a Rebels squad allowing an average of 78.5 points during its current losing streak.
Texas won the last meeting between the programs, 72-67, in Oxford on Jan. 20, 2024. Saturday’s contest is the only scheduled matchup this season.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
