Prairie View at Bethune-Cookman
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Interstat) — A surging Bethune-Cookman squad will look to continue its climb in the SWAC standings when it hosts a Prairie View A&M team coming off its best win of the season on Saturday at Moore Gymnasium.
The Wildcats (11-11, 7-2 SWAC) have won six of their last seven games, including a decisive 80-62 road victory at Alabama A&M on Monday. Junior guard Jakobi Heady has been instrumental, averaging 20.4 points over that seven-game stretch. He scored 19 in the win over the Bulldogs and is the conference’s leading scorer in league play.
They will face a Panthers team (9-13, 5-4) that snapped a three-game skid with an 85-78 home win over Texas Southern last Saturday. Guard Tai’Reon Joseph erupted for a season-high 31 points in that victory, showcasing the scoring punch he provides alongside backcourt mate Dontae Horne, who added 23 points and five assists.
The matchup pits two of the league’s top offensive talents in Heady and Joseph. Joseph’s production, however, has been volatile; after his 31-point outburst, he was held to six points in a loss to Alabama State on Jan. 24.
Bethune-Cookman has dominated at home in conference play, winning all five SWAC games in Daytona Beach by an average margin of 18.2 points. Their most recent home game was an 85-48 rout of Jackson State on Jan. 24.
Prairie View has struggled on the road this season, posting a 1-9 record away from home. Their lone road win in SWAC play came at Southern on Jan. 5.
The Wildcats won both meetings last season. Saturday’s contest is crucial for mid-conference positioning as the regular season enters its final month.
