Henderson Leads Portland State to Decisive Big Sky Victory
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — Jaylin Henderson scored 30 points and dished out seven assists, leading Portland State to a decisive 88-65 victory over Idaho State in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game Monday night at the Stott Center.
The Vikings, improving to 15-6 overall and solidifying their position near the top of the league, used a dominant first-half performance to seize control. They shot efficiently from the opening tip, building a 43-32 halftime lead that they would never relinquish. The Bengals, who fell to 10-13, struggled to contain Portland State’s offensive rhythm and could not mount a significant challenge after the break.
The most critical stretch of the game came early in the second half, when Portland State extinguished any lingering hope of an Idaho State rally. Leading 48-34, the Vikings unleashed a 16-2 run over a four-minute span that transformed a comfortable lead into an insurmountable 64-36 advantage. Henderson was the catalyst, scoring or assisting on half of the points during the surge. The run featured a punishing inside-out attack, with Terri Miller converting inside and Kelcy Phipps capping it with a three-pointer, assisted by Henderson. Idaho State committed three turnovers during the pivotal stretch, which allowed the Vikings to accelerate the pace and score in transition, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Henderson, a 6-foot-3 guard from Wichita, Kansas, was the engine for Portland State, playing 37 minutes and orchestrating the offense with precision. His 30-point effort marked a season high and came on an array of drives, pull-up jumpers, and free throws. He was complemented powerfully by Miller, a 6-foot-8 forward from Fresno, California, who added 22 points, three assists, and a steal. Phipps provided a key spark off the bench with 11 points, including two three-pointers during the game-breaking run.
Idaho State was led by Caleb Van De Griend, who scored 13 points, and Evan Otten, who contributed 12 points and four blocked shots. Connor Hollenbeck added 10 points for the Bengals. Despite Otten’s presence in the paint with his four blocks, the Bengals’ defense could not consistently string together stops, and their offense failed to match Portland State’s firepower, shooting a lower percentage from the field.
The game was a reversal of fortune from the teams’ previous meeting on Jan. 3, which Portland State won 93-87 in overtime in Pocatello. This time, the Vikings ensured no late drama was necessary, controlling the contest from start to finish in front of a home crowd of 1,023.
Portland State, which entered the game as a 6.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, easily covered the spread. The combined score of 153 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 135.5. The Vikings’ performance aligned with statistical projections that gave them an 83.7 percent probability to win.
With the victory, Portland State continues a strong conference campaign, while Idaho State looks to regroup. The Vikings next travel to face Sacramento State on Saturday. Idaho State returns home to host Northern Arizona on Thursday.
