Lindenwood Tops Southern Indiana in Defensive Struggle

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — A dominant defensive performance anchored by a historic shot-blocking display from Milos Nenadic propelled the Lindenwood Lions to a 73-60 victory over the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at the Physical Activities Center.

The Lions, who improved to 13-9 overall, built a nine-point halftime lead and never let the struggling Screaming Eagles (5-15) mount a serious second-half challenge. The game was effectively decided by Lindenwood’s overwhelming defensive pressure, which translated into easy offense.

The most pivotal aspect of the contest was Lindenwood’s complete control of the paint and passing lanes, spearheaded by Nenadic. The 6-foot-10 junior from Kitchener, Canada, recorded a staggering 10 blocks, a figure that not only anchored the Lions’ 15-block team effort but also disrupted nearly every Southern Indiana foray into the lane. His defensive presence, combined with 18 points and a game-high 36 minutes, earned him the unofficial title of game-changer.

Lindenwood’s defense was multifaceted. The Lions matched their block total with 15 steals, leading to 23 points off 18 Southern Indiana turnovers. They also limited the Screaming Eagles to a frigid 30.9% shooting from the field, including just 5 of 20 from three-point range. Southern Indiana’s offensive rating of 71.0 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of profound offensive frustration.

Offensively, Lindenwood leveraged its defensive stops into transition opportunities, outscoring Southern Indiana 30-8 in fastbreak points. While the Lions shot only 39.7% themselves, they attacked the rim relentlessly, earning 27 free throws and making 21, while outscoring the Screaming Eagles 42-24 in the paint.

Dontrez Williams, a 6-foot-5 guard from Sikeston, Missouri, led all scorers with 21 points for Lindenwood, adding two assists and two blocks. Anias Futrell of St. Louis contributed 20 points, two blocks, and was a key part of the defensive effort with multiple steals and rebounds.

Southern Indiana was led by Amaree Brown’s 22 points, though he needed 21 shot attempts to reach that total. Cardell Bailey added 10 points off the bench. The Screaming Eagles struggled with ball security and shot creation throughout, unable to solve Lindenwood’s length and activity.

The Lions set the tone early, using a 9-0 run midway through the first half to establish a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. A key sequence with just over 12 minutes left in the first half encapsulated the night: a steal by Dontrez Williams led to a fastbreak dunk by Milos Nenadic, forcing a Southern Indiana timeout with Lindenwood already leading 15-3. The Screaming Eagles never closed the gap to fewer than six points after that initial burst.

Southern Indiana made a minor push early in the second half, cutting the deficit to 34-29 on an Amaree Brown three-pointer. However, Lindenwood responded immediately with a 7-0 spurt, capped by another Nenadic layup, to push the lead back to 12 and effectively end any lingering suspense.

The game, witnessed by an announced crowd of 1,081, saw Lindenwood outperform its pregame expectations as a 4-point favorite, though the total score fell well under the projected over/under of 148.5.

The victory gives Lindenwood a regular-season sweep of Southern Indiana, having also won an 83-80 decision on Jan. 3. The Lions will look to carry this defensive momentum into their next contest at Morehead State on Saturday. Southern Indiana, mired in a difficult season, will aim to regroup when it hosts SIU Edwardsville, also on Saturday.
