Coppin State at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — The Norfolk State Spartans will look to build on a modest winning streak when they host the struggling Coppin State Eagles in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Echols Hall.

Norfolk State (9-12, 3-2 MEAC) has won two straight, including an 89-82 conference road win at South Carolina State last Saturday and an 86-61 non-conference victory over Elizabeth City State on Monday. The Spartans have found a rhythm offensively, averaging 87.5 points in those two wins.

A primary catalyst has been guard Anthony McComb, who is coming off a career-high 25-point performance against Elizabeth City State. Over his last three games, McComb is averaging 23.7 points, providing a critical scoring punch for the Spartans.

Coppin State (3-17, 1-3) enters on a three-game skid, with each loss coming by single digits in MEAC play. The Eagles fell 70-67 at Maryland-Eastern Shore last Saturday, a game in which they led by nine points at halftime. Close losses have been a theme; four of their last five defeats have been by six points or fewer.

The Eagles will rely on guard Nelson Lamizana, who scored 16 points in the loss to UMES and had 10 points in the team’s last victory, a 53-51 win at Delaware State on Jan. 3. Consistency from Lamizana and others will be key for an Eagles squad that has struggled offensively at times this season.

Historically, Norfolk State has dominated the series, winning the last 11 meetings. The teams will meet again in Baltimore on Feb. 28.

Saturday’s contest represents a chance for the Spartans to solidify their position in the upper half of the MEAC standings, while the Eagles are in desperate need of a conference road win to spark their season. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. EST.
