Preview of Yale at Penn Men’s Basketball

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — A surging Yale team visits a resilient Penn squad in a key Ivy League matchup Saturday at The Palestra.

The Yale Bulldogs (13-3, 3-1 Ivy) enter with the conference’s best overall record, having won eight of their last nine games. Their offense has been potent, averaging 88 points in their last two victories. They are led by forward Nick Townsend, who is averaging 19.2 points and 6.5 rebounds over his last five games. Townsend scored 25 points in Monday’s 91-74 win over Columbia, supported by Samson Aletan’s 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Penn Quakers (9-8, 2-2) have played a string of close games, with their last three Ivy contests decided by a total of five points. Guard Ethan Roberts has been a consistent force, averaging 24.8 points over his last five outings. He scored 27 in a narrow 64-63 loss at Harvard on Monday, where AJ Levine added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Yale’s only conference loss came on the road at Princeton on Jan. 10. Penn’s two Ivy losses are by a combined three points, including an overtime defeat at Princeton.

The game features a contrast in styles: Yale’s high-scoring, efficient attack against a Penn team accustomed to gritty, tight finishes. Containing Townsend inside will be a primary challenge for the Quakers, while the Bulldogs must account for Roberts’ scoring burst from the perimeter.

The Palestra, a historic venue in Philadelphia, will host the 1 p.m. tipoff. This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams; they will play again in New Haven, Connecticut, on Feb. 21.

Yale next hosts Dartmouth and Harvard on Jan. 30-31. Penn continues its homestand against Columbia and Cornell on those same dates.
