Alabama A&M at Texas Southern
Preview: Alabama A&M Bulldogs at Texas Southern Tigers
HOUSTON (Interstat) — A surging Alabama A&M squad visits a struggling Texas Southern team in a Southwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Health & P.E. Arena.
The Bulldogs (10-8, 3-2 SWAC) enter on a two-game winning streak, including a 73-69 road victory over rival Alabama State on Monday. Guard Sami Pissis led the way with 22 points and four assists, continuing a strong stretch. Over his last three games, Pissis is averaging 15 points and 3.7 assists.
The Tigers (4-13, 2-3), however, aim to defend their home court and reverse a season of difficulties. They are coming off a narrow 94-89 loss at Jackson State on Monday, despite a career-high 26 points from guard Bryce Roberts. Roberts has been a bright spot, averaging 20.7 points over his last three contests.
Alabama A&M’s recent success has been fueled by efficient offense, scoring 100 points in a win over Jackson State on Jan. 12. Alongside Pissis, Kintavious Dozier (19 points vs. Alabama State) provides a consistent scoring threat.
Texas Southern, under first-year coach, seeks more consistent production beyond Roberts. Forward Troy Hupstead added 23 points in the loss to Jackson State. The Tigers’ wins have largely come at home, including an 84-51 rout of Mississippi Valley State on Jan. 12.
The Bulldogs have shown vulnerability on the road in conference play, with a loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff earlier this month. Texas Southern will need to exploit that trend and improve its defensive effort to slow Alabama A&M’s momentum.
This game marks the only scheduled meeting between the teams this regular season. Following this contest, Alabama A&M travels to face Prairie View A&M on Monday, while Texas Southern hosts Alabama State the same night.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. CST Saturday.
