Eastern Kentucky at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the ASUN Conference will meet Saturday when the Eastern Kentucky Colonels visit the Jacksonville Dolphins.
Both teams enter the 7 p.m. EST tipoff at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena with identical 7-12 overall records. The matchup represents a critical opportunity for either squad to climb the league standings and build on recent performances.
Eastern Kentucky (7-12) is coming off its most dominant win of the season, an 89-69 home victory over Bellarmine last Saturday. The Colonels’ offense was fueled by guard MJ Williams, who scored 16 points in 20 minutes, and a balanced effort that saw Montavious Myrick add 12 points and three blocks, while Turner Buttry contributed 14 points and four assists. Williams has been a key variable, fluctuating from an 18-point outing at Queens (N.C.) on Jan. 1 to quieter performances, but his playmaking will be central to the Colonels’ attack.
Jacksonville (7-12) also posted a convincing road win last Saturday, defeating North Alabama 90-68. The Dolphins were led by a career-high 25 points from forward Hayden Wood, who has emerged as a consistent scoring threat. Wood has averaged 18.5 points over his last four games, including an 18-point effort in a narrow 62-60 loss at Central Arkansas on Jan. 15. His matchup against Eastern Kentucky’s interior defense will be pivotal.
The game features two teams with similar profiles but contrasting recent rhythms. Eastern Kentucky has won three of its last five, with all three victories coming at home. Jacksonville has split its last four, showcasing both explosive offense and periods of struggle. The Dolphins will look to protect their home court, where they are 5-4 this season, while the Colonels aim to translate their home success to the road.
Defensive consistency may decide the outcome. Eastern Kentucky allows 77.2 points per game, while Jacksonville yields 71.7. Whichever team can better contain the other’s offensive catalyst — Williams for the Colonels or Wood for the Dolphins — will hold a significant advantage in a contest between two evenly matched squads fighting for conference positioning.
