Stony Brook at Northeastern
Preview: Stony Brook Seawolves at Northeastern Huskies
BOSTON (Interstat) — Riding the momentum of a historic individual performance, the Stony Brook Seawolves visit the Northeastern Huskies in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup Thursday night at Matthews Arena.
The Seawolves (11-9, 3-4 CAA) are coming off a thrilling 112-106 double-overtime victory over College of Charleston on Saturday, powered by a spectacular outing from guard Erik Pratt. The standout junior played all 50 minutes, scoring 39 points and dishing out 13 assists. Pratt enters Thursday’s contest as one of the conference’s hottest players, averaging 24.4 points over his last seven games.
Stony Brook has won two of its last three, showing improved offensive form after a 37-point outing in a loss at Drexel on Jan. 8.
Northeastern (6-12, 1-5) looks to halt a three-game skid and find consistency after a 68-81 loss at Monmouth on Monday. The Huskies have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 86.3 points during their losing streak. Guard Mike Loughnane, who posted 23 points in a loss at Campbell on Jan. 3, will be a key facilitator. He tallied nine assists in the Huskies’ most recent win, an 85-78 victory over Elon on Jan. 15.
The Huskies will need to contain Pratt to have success. Stony Brook is 2-0 this season when he scores at least 30 points. Northeastern’s defense, ranked near the bottom of the CAA, faces a significant test against a Seawolves offense that just produced its highest point total of the season.
Historically, this is the first meeting between the programs as CAA foes. The game tips off at 7 p.m. EST as both teams seek to improve their positioning in the conference standings ahead of the February stretch run.
