Utah Tech at California Baptist
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference rematch awaits when California Baptist hosts Utah Tech on Wednesday night, just two weeks after the Lancers secured a decisive victory in the first meeting.
The Lancers (13-6, 3-3 WAC) defeated the Trailblazers 84-72 on Jan. 8 at CBU Events Center, part of a strong start that has them positioned near the top of the conference standings. California Baptist is coming off a 74-58 road win at Abilene Christian on Jan. 15, where Martel Williams scored 23 points. Williams also led the Lancers with 17 points in the earlier win over Utah Tech.
Utah Tech (10-10, 2-4) looks to split the season series and build momentum after a 75-71 home win over Tarleton State on Saturday. That victory snapped a three-game skid for the Trailblazers.
A key focus will be the matchup between two of the WAC’s top performers. Utah Tech forward Ethan Potter is averaging 18.3 points per game in conference play, including a 20-point effort in the loss at California Baptist earlier this month and 23 points in the win over Tarleton State.
California Baptist’s Williams has been equally potent, averaging 17.3 points in WAC contests. His scoring ability from the guard position will challenge a Utah Tech defense that has been inconsistent in conference play.
The Lancers have been strong at home this season, while the Trailblazers have struggled on the road, including the Jan. 8 defeat in Riverside. Utah Tech will need to find answers for California Baptist’s balanced attack, which saw Jayden Jackson and Jordan Mueller combine for 19 points in the previous matchup to support Williams.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at CBU Events Center. The game is part of a tight WAC schedule where both teams are jockeying for postseason positioning. Utah Tech visits Southern Utah on Jan. 24, while California Baptist hosts Utah Valley on Jan. 24.
