Akron Routs Buffalo in MAC Men’s Basketball Showdown

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Akron Zips established a dominant early lead and never looked back, cruising to an 82-63 victory over the Buffalo Bulls in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Alumni Arena.

From the opening tip, Akron seized control with a blistering offensive display in the first half. The Zips built a commanding 43-27 halftime advantage, fueled by efficient shooting and a stifling defensive effort that left the Bulls struggling to find any rhythm. The 16-point halftime deficit proved insurmountable for Buffalo, as Akron maintained a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half, extending its winning streak to three games.

The most important part of the game was Akron’s immediate and overwhelming start. The Zips opened the contest with a decisive 9-0 run, highlighted by two quick three-pointers from forward Amani Lyles. This early surge set the tone for the entire evening, putting Buffalo on its heels and allowing Akron to dictate the pace and style of play. The Bulls, playing in front of a home crowd of 1,203, were forced into a chase mode from which they never recovered, as the Zips’ lead never dipped below nine points after the initial minutes.

Lyles, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, was instrumental in the fast start and finished as a key contributor. He scored 18 points and dished out four assists in 26 minutes of action. Guard Tavari Johnson orchestrated the offense effectively, adding 13 points and six assists for the Zips.

Despite the lopsided score, Buffalo guard Ryan Sabol delivered a standout individual performance. The 6-foot-2 junior from Washington, D.C., poured in a game-high 26 points, including four three-pointers, and blocked two shots in 38 minutes. His efforts, however, were not enough to counter Akron’s balanced attack.

The Zips showcased their depth with four players scoring in double figures. Alongside Lyles and Johnson, Evan Mahaffey scored 11 points and Eric Mahaffey added 10. Guard Shammah Scott contributed seven points and five assists. For the Bulls, Angelo Brizzi scored 12 points and point guard Derrick Talton Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas, facilitated the offense with 10 assists, though he was limited to just four points.

Defensively, Akron disrupted Buffalo’s offensive flow, forcing 15 turnovers which led to 19 points. The Zips also shared the ball effectively, tallying 21 assists on 30 made field goals. Buffalo shot just 36% from the field for the game and was hampered by a 7-of-30 performance from beyond the three-point arc.

With the win, Akron improved to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in MAC play. The loss dropped Buffalo to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The victory also served as a measure of revenge for the Zips, who fell to the Bulls in their previous meeting last season.

According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Akron was projected as a heavy favorite with an 83.9% probability to win. The Zips covered the pregame spread of 9 points. The total combined score of 145 points fell well under the over/under line of 170.

Akron will look to continue its conference success when it returns home to host Toledo next Tuesday. Buffalo will aim to rebound on the road at Bowling Green, also next Tuesday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch at Akron on Feb. 24.
