Ivy League Showdown Set for New Haven as Yale Hosts Cornell
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in early-season trajectories will be on display Saturday when the Yale Bulldogs host the Cornell Big Red in an Ivy League men’s basketball matchup at Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (11-3) enter conference play as one of the league’s hottest teams, while the Big Red (7-8) seeks to stabilize after a high-scoring but defensively challenging start.
Yale, coming off a 76-60 road loss at Princeton last Saturday, has built its record on a stout defense and balanced scoring. A key figure in the frontcourt is Samson Aletan, who is averaging a near double-double in recent play. He posted 11 points and eight rebounds against Princeton and followed a 13-point, four-block performance in a win at Brown on Jan. 5.
Cornell, conversely, possesses one of the nation’s most potent offenses but has struggled to secure stops. The Big Red are averaging over 95 points per game but have lost three of their last four, including a 102-91 defeat to Dartmouth and a 104-99 loss to Columbia last week.
The engine for Cornell is guard Jake Fiegen, who is in the midst of a spectacular scoring run. He poured in a career-high 33 points in the loss to Dartmouth, following a 17-point effort against Columbia. Over his last five games, Fiegen is averaging 18.6 points.
Yale’s defense, which held opponents under 70 points in eight of its 11 wins, will face its toughest test in weeks against Cornell’s up-tempo attack. The Bulldogs have not allowed more than 80 points in a victory this season.
The Bulldogs lead the all-time series, but Cornell’s offensive firepower presents a unique challenge. The game could hinge on whether Yale can control the pace and limit Fiegen’s production, or if Cornell can find enough defensive answers to complement its high-powered scoring.
Saturday’s contest is the Ivy League opener for both teams. Yale will host Columbia on Monday, while Cornell travels to face Brown.
