Alcorn State Edges Alabama A&M in SWAC Thriller

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grinding defense and missed opportunities, the Alcorn State Braves found just enough offense at the finish to edge the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 64-62 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball clash on Saturday night at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.

A crowd of 2,312 saw the Braves, who entered the game with a 1-12 record, snap a two-game skid and earn a hard-fought road victory to improve to 2-12 overall. Alabama A&M fell to .500 at 8-8.

The contest was a defensive struggle from the outset, with both teams combining for a frigid start. The first points did not come until nearly two minutes had elapsed, when Alabama A&M’s Bilal Abdur-Rahman connected on a 3-pointer. The Bulldogs built an early 10-3 lead, capitalizing on early Alcorn State turnovers.

Alcorn State settled in behind the play of guard Jameel Morris, who shook off a couple of early miscues to fuel a response. The Braves clawed back, and the first half became a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Alabama A&M took a slim 34-29 advantage into halftime, thanks in part to a Koron Davis layup just before the buzzer.

The second half followed a similar pattern of attrition. Neither team shot above 35% from the field after halftime, and 3-pointers were a particular struggle; Alabama A&M finished just 5 of 24 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs maintained a narrow lead for much of the period, but their inability to convert at the free-throw line, where they went 9 for 17, kept the door ajar.

The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the final three minutes. Trailing 60-58, Alcorn State’s Omari Hamilton, who provided a crucial spark off the bench with 12 points, drilled a 3-pointer from the wing with 3:13 remaining to put the Braves ahead 61-60. Alabama A&M’s Kintavious Dozier answered with two free throws to reclaim a 62-61 lead for the Bulldogs with 2:06 left.

On the ensuing possession, Alcorn State worked the ball to Tycen McDaniels in the post. The 6-foot-8 forward powered up a layup through contact with 1:49 on the clock, giving the Braves a 63-62 lead they would not relinquish. The final 109 seconds were a testament to the game’s defensive nature, as both teams came up empty on multiple possessions.

Alabama A&M had two chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute. After an Alcorn State shot-clock violation, the Bulldogs ran their offense but turned the ball over on a shot-clock violation of their own with 54 seconds left. Following an Alcorn State timeout, the Braves missed a hook shot, giving Alabama A&M one final opportunity with 24 seconds remaining.

The Bulldogs set up for a final shot, but Dozier’s contested 3-point attempt from the top of the key as time expired missed the mark, sealing the narrow victory for the visitors.

Morris, a junior from Willingboro, New Jersey, was the catalyst for Alcorn State, scoring a game-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including two 3-pointers, and adding four assists. His performance was a significant bounce-back after being held to five points in his previous outing.

McDaniels provided vital interior presence with 12 points, two blocks, and several key rebounds. Hamilton’s 12 points off the bench, all in the second half, proved equally critical.

For Alabama A&M, Davis led the way with 17 points, while Sami Pissis and PJ Eason each added 12. Eason also contributed a game-high five defensive rebounds. The Bulldogs’ offense, however, was hampered by 11 turnovers and their poor shooting from distance and the charity stripe.

Alcorn State, which scored its 64 points on 65 possessions for an offensive rating of 98.2, will look to build on the win when it travels to face Alabama State on Monday. Alabama A&M, which managed 62 points on 66 possessions (93.8 offensive rating), will host Jackson State, also on Monday.
