Grambling at Bethune-Cookman
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Interstat) — A surging Grambling team looks to continue its climb in the SWAC standings when it visits a struggling Bethune-Cookman squad on Saturday at Moore Gymnasium.
The Grambling Tigers (8-7) have won three straight and five of their last six, most recently an 84-67 home victory over Texas Southern on Monday. Guard Roderick Coffee led the way with 21 points in that win, continuing a strong stretch where he has averaged 14.2 points and 4.2 assists over his last six games. Derrius Ward added 20 points in the victory.
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (4-10) snapped a five-game losing streak with an 87-83 win over Florida A&M last Saturday. Forward Tyler Andrews posted 20 points and seven rebounds in that contest, highlighting a recent run of aggressive play. Andrews has averaged 14.8 points over his last five games, providing a bright spot for a Wildcats team that has faced a difficult non-conference schedule featuring road losses at Arizona, Oklahoma State and Missouri.
This matchup marks the beginning of a critical conference stretch for both teams. Grambling, which has found its rhythm after early road struggles, will rely on its backcourt tandem of Coffee and Ward. Bethune-Cookman will need Andrews and guard Jakobi Heady, who scored 18 points against Florida A&M, to generate consistent offense to challenge the Tigers’ momentum.
Defense may be the deciding factor. Grambling has held opponents to an average of 68.3 points during its three-game win streak, while Bethune-Cookman has allowed 90 points or more in four of its last six outings.
Saturday’s game tips off at 4 p.m. EST. Grambling travels to face Florida A&M on Monday, while Bethune-Cookman hosts Southern the same day.
