UNC Wilmington at Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. (Interstat) — A surging UNC Wilmington squad aims to continue its dominant start when it visits Stony Brook in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
The Seahawks (15-2) enter on a five-game winning streak, most recently an 87-78 road victory at Northeastern on Thursday. They have been one of the nation’s surprise teams, boasting a 6-1 record in true road games.
Stony Brook (9-8) looks to rebound from a sluggish offensive performance in a 56-37 loss at Drexel on Thursday. The Seawolves have struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over their past six games.
UNC Wilmington is powered by center Patrick Wessler, who is coming off a 19-point effort at Northeastern. Over his last seven games, Wessler is averaging 14.1 points and has recorded multiple blocks in four contests. He is complemented by Nolan Hodge, who added 17 points and four blocks against the Huskies.
The Seawolves will rely on guard Erik Pratt, their leading scorer in conference play. Pratt averaged 20.3 points over a three-game stretch from Dec. 29-Jan. 3, including a 23-point outing in an 81-80 win over North Carolina A&T. He was held to 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting in the loss to Drexel.
Defense has been a cornerstone for UNC Wilmington, which has held opponents to 65 points or fewer in eight games this season. Stony Brook’s offense, which averages 66.2 points, will be tested after being held under 60 points in three of its last five games.
The Seahawks have not lost since a one-point defeat to Howard on Dec. 20. Stony Brook seeks a signature conference win to climb above .500 and improve its standing in the CAA.
Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon.
