Titans Upset Tritons Behind Williams’ 22 Points, Stifling Defense

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of form and expectation, the Cal State Fullerton Titans delivered their most complete performance of the season, dismantling the UC San Diego Tritons 88-71 in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at RIMAC Arena.

The result was a shock to the system of the conference race, as the visiting Titans, who entered with a 6-10 record, thoroughly outplayed a Tritons squad that was 12-3 and projected by advanced metrics to win with near-certainty. Cal State Fullerton never trailed, leading for over 39 minutes, and turned a narrow three-point halftime edge into a second-half rout before an announced crowd of 2,137.

The most important sequence of the game arrived early in the second half, effectively extinguishing any hope of a UC San Diego rally. Leading 35-32 at the break, the Titans exploded with a 15-3 run over the first four minutes after halftime. The burst was fueled by the game’s standout, guard Christian Williams, and relentless defensive pressure.

Williams, a junior from St. Louis, Missouri, scored eight points during the decisive run, including a three-pointer and a driving layup. The Titans forced three Tritons turnovers in that span, converting them directly into easy baskets. When Josh Ward finished a fast break with a layup off a feed from Kendrick De Luna, the Titans’ lead ballooned to 50-35 with 16:26 to play, prompting a full timeout from a stunned UC San Diego bench. The Tritons would never cut the deficit below double digits again.

Williams finished with a game-high 22 points, spearheading an exceptionally efficient Cal State Fullerton offense. The Titans shot 50% from the field and a blistering 51.7% from three-point range, making 15 of 29 attempts. They scored 88 points on just 69 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 126.8, while their defense held UC San Diego to a meager 99.3 rating.

The contrast in styles was stark. Cal State Fullerton played a clean, opportunistic game, committing only five turnovers while forcing 16 from the Tritons. Those mistakes led to a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers for the Titans, who also outscored UC San Diego 18-4 on fast breaks. The Tritons, meanwhile, struggled mightily from beyond the arc, making just 9 of 34 three-point attempts.

Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro of Cal State Fullerton orchestrated the offense with six assists, while Bryce Cofield, Josh Ward, and Landon Seaman each added 12 points. Seaman’s 14 points off the bench provided a critical spark. For UC San Diego, Bol Dengdit led the way with 15 points and Alex Chaikin added 14, but the team’s typically potent attack was stifled.

The victory improved Cal State Fullerton to 7-10 overall and marked a significant bounce-back after a 22-point loss to UC Irvine in their previous outing. UC San Diego, which had won eight of its last nine, fell to 12-4. The Titans will look to build on the momentum Saturday at home against Cal State Northridge, while the Tritons travel to face UC Riverside.
