Lindenwood Edges Southern Indiana in Tight OVC Contest
ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless interior pressure and a decisive rebounding advantage, the Lindenwood Lions edged the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 83-80 in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball clash on Saturday at Robert F. Hyland Performance Arena.
The victory improved Lindenwood to 10-5 overall, while Southern Indiana fell to 3-10.
The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the final three minutes, with the outcome hanging in the balance. Trailing 80-77 after a jump shot from Southern Indiana’s Cardell Bailey, Lindenwood responded with a crucial 6-0 run to seize control. Milos Nenadic, the game’s standout performer, found Dontrez Williams for a three-pointer to tie the game at 80 with just under three minutes remaining. After a Southern Indiana miss, Nenadic then stole the ball from Sheridan Sharp and fed Anias Futrell, who was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to give the Lions an 82-80 lead they would not relinquish.
Southern Indiana had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final minute but came up empty. A missed jump shot by Sharp was followed by a critical turnover with 13 seconds left. Lindenwood’s Williams was fouled and made one of two free throws to extend the lead to three. The Screaming Eagles’ final attempt, a three-pointer by Sharp as time expired, was off the mark.
The game’s foundation was built on Lindenwood’s overwhelming dominance in the paint and on the glass. The Lions outscored Southern Indiana 60-42 inside and, more tellingly, grabbed 17 offensive rebounds to the Screaming Eagles’ nine. This led to a significant disparity in possessions, with Lindenwood attempting 71 shots to Southern Indiana’s 63 despite committing only three fewer turnovers.
Nenadic, a 6-foot-10 forward from Kitchener, Canada, was instrumental in establishing that advantage. He finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in 33 minutes, consistently scoring around the basket and protecting the rim. His frontcourt partner, Robert Lewis of St. Louis, posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Southern Indiana was led by a balanced offensive effort. Sheridan Sharp of Indianapolis scored 18 points, while Cardell Bailey of Detroit also added 18. Tolu Samuels of Chicago contributed 15 points and nine rebounds. The Screaming Eagles shot a respectable 49.2% from the field but were hampered by 14 turnovers and their inability to secure defensive boards at key moments.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Southern Indiana taking a narrow 45-43 lead into halftime behind efficient shooting. The Screaming Eagles extended their lead to six points early in the second half before Lindenwood began to methodically impose its physical will. A 10-2 Lions run midway through the period, fueled by second-chance points and defensive stops, shifted the momentum permanently in favor of the home team.
Lindenwood’s offensive rating of 117.4 points per 100 possessions underscored its efficient scoring, largely a product of high-percentage shots near the basket. Southern Indiana, despite a solid offensive rating of 107.2, could not match that consistency down the stretch.
The game attracted an attendance of 913. Lindenwood, which was projected as a heavy favorite by analytics and betting lines, covered the spread in the narrow victory, while the combined score of 163 points went over the posted total.
Southern Indiana looks to rebound when it hosts Southeast Missouri State on Thursday. Lindenwood travels to face SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday.
