Norfolk State at North Carolina Central

Preview: Norfolk State Spartans at North Carolina Central Eagles

DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — Two men’s basketball teams seeking momentum to open the new year will meet Saturday when the Norfolk State Spartans visit the North Carolina Central Eagles at McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup features teams with a combined 10-21 record entering the Jan. 3 contest. Norfolk State (6-10) holds a slight edge in the standings over North Carolina Central (4-11), but both have struggled for consistency in nonconference play.

The Spartans are looking to rebound from a 54-63 loss at Louisiana-Lafayette on Dec. 28. Guard Jordan Leaks has been a bright spot, coming off a 16-point, 8-rebound, 4-assist performance in that defeat. Over his last eight games, Leaks is averaging 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists, showcasing his all-around game. Norfolk State’s season has been marked by narrow defeats, including a one-point loss at James Madison and a two-point win at UTEP.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are hoping home court provides a spark after a 67-90 loss at Penn State on Monday. Forward Khouri Carvey has been a consistent force for NCCU, averaging 13.6 points and 7.6 rebounds over his last five outings. He nearly posted a double-double against the Nittany Lions with 13 points and nine rebounds, and recorded a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double in a close loss to Longwood on Dec. 20.

Both teams have faced challenging early schedules with road losses to power-conference opponents like Baylor, Arizona, Kentucky and North Carolina. This game represents an opportunity to build confidence as MEAC play intensifies.

Historically, the rivalry between the Spartans and Eagles has been competitive, adding another layer to Saturday’s contest. The Eagles will rely on Carvey’s interior presence and the backcourt play of Kyric Davis, who had 10 points and five rebounds against Penn State. The Spartans will counter with Leaks and look for contributions from My’kel Jenkins and Keyontae Lewis.

Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon in Durham. The game will be the conference opener for both programs as they aim to reverse their early-season fortunes.
