Texas Faces Top-Ranked UConn in Marquette Non-Conference Clash

HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — A premier non-conference showdown highlights the college basketball slate Friday as the Texas Longhorns visit the top-ranked Connecticut Huskies at XL Center.

The matchup pits two of the sport’s premier programs in a rare regular-season meeting. UConn (9-1), the reigning national champion, has continued its dominant form, with its only loss a four-point setback to then-Arizona on Nov. 19. Texas (7-3) seeks a signature road win to bolster its resume, having stumbled against ranked opponents Virginia and Duke earlier this season.

The Huskies are anchored by forward Alex Karaban, a veteran leader averaging 11.7 points per game. He has been a consistent two-way force, logging heavy minutes in close wins over Florida and Kansas. His defensive presence will be critical against a potent Texas offense.

The Longhorns counter with high-scoring guard Matas Vokietaitis, who is coming off a career-high 28 points in just 24 minutes in Monday’s 95-69 rout of Southern. Over his last seven games, Vokietaitis is averaging 15.9 points, providing a dynamic scoring spark for Texas.

UConn’s defense, allowing just 61.2 points per game in its last five outings, will be tested by a Texas team averaging 88.4 points in its wins. The Longhorns, however, have shown vulnerability on the road, falling at Duke in their season opener.

This contest serves as a final major test for both teams before conference play intensifies. Texas begins Southeastern Conference action Jan. 3, while UConn opens Big East play Dec. 21.

Friday’s winner will secure a résumé-topping victory that could pay dividends in March. For UConn, it’s a chance to reaffirm its status. For Texas, it’s an opportunity to announce itself as a true national contender.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on ESPN.
