Utah Outlasts California Baptist in High-Scoring Affair

SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive execution and a decisive disparity at the free-throw line, the Utah Utes outlasted the California Baptist Lancers 91-85 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

A crowd of 6,077 saw the Utes improve to 7-3, while the Lancers fell to an identical 7-3 mark.

The contest was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. While both teams finished with identical 73 possessions, Utah’s offensive precision proved superior. The Utes posted an offensive rating of 125.4, fueled by a 49.1% shooting performance from the floor and a critical 29-of-37 effort from the free-throw line. California Baptist, despite a valiant effort, managed an offensive rating of 116.4, shooting 45.8% from the field and a costly 12 of 19 from the charity stripe.

The Lancers dominated the interior, outscoring Utah 48-28 in the paint and grabbing 20 offensive rebounds to the Utes’ nine. However, Utah countered with superior transition play, outscoring California Baptist 15-2 on fast breaks, and capitalized more effectively on mistakes, turning nine Lancers turnovers into 19 points.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the final minute, as Utah’s composure at the line sealed the victory. Leading 87-85 with 12 seconds remaining, Utes guard Terrence Brown was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to extend the lead to four. After a California Baptist timeout, the Lancers’ ensuing possession broke down, resulting in a missed layup. Brown secured the defensive rebound, was immediately fouled, and iced the game with two more free throws, providing the final margin.

Brown, a junior from Minneapolis, was the catalyst for Utah, scoring a game-high 27 points in 33 minutes, adding four assists and two steals. His performance at the line was impeccable, going 9 for 9, including the four clutch makes in the final moments. He was supported by Don McHenry, who scored 21 points, and Keanu Dawes, who contributed 10 points and a game-high seven assists.

California Baptist was led by a spectacular 31-point effort from guard Dominique Daniels of Compton, California. The 5-foot-10 junior played 39 minutes, relentlessly attacking the basket. Center Thomas Ndong added 14 points, and Martel Williams scored 14.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Utah taking a narrow 41-38 lead into halftime. The Utes built their advantage in the second period, largely by drawing fouls and converting at the line. A key sequence midway through the half saw Utah push its lead to double digits, a cushion that proved vital as the Lancers mounted a late charge behind Daniels’ scoring.

The game’s statistical profile highlighted Utah’s strategic edge. The Utes attempted 18 more free throws than the Lancers and made 17 more, a 17-point differential that directly accounted for the margin of victory. California Baptist’s gritty work on the offensive glass and interior scoring kept them within striking distance but could not overcome Utah’s efficient scoring and late-game poise.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Utah entered with a 74.9% probability to win and covered the pregame spread of 7 points. The total score of 176 points sailed over the over/under line of 145.5.

Utah next plays Mississippi State on Dec. 13 in a game to be held in Salt Lake City. California Baptist travels to face Eastern Washington on Dec. 12.
