Wildcats Dominate Bulldogs for Home Victory

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Interstat) — Jakobi Heady scored 22 points to lead a dominant offensive performance, and Bethune-Cookman never trailed in an 80-59 victory over winless South Carolina State in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday night at Moore Gymnasium.

The Wildcats (3-6) seized control with a blistering first-half shooting display, building a 43-30 halftime lead that the Bulldogs (0-9) could not meaningfully challenge. Bethune-Cookman’s efficient offense, coupled with disruptive defense, proved too much for a South Carolina State team still searching for its first win of the season.

Heady, a 6-foot-6 guard from Chicago, was the catalyst, hitting three first-half 3-pointers as part of his game-high output. He added two assists and a steal in 32 minutes, bouncing back from a four-point outing in his previous game. Arterio Morris provided crucial support with 17 points and five assists, while Daniel Rouzan controlled the interior with 15 points, including several emphatic dunks, and a blocked shot.

The most important stretch of the game came early in the first half, when Bethune-Cookman transformed a narrow 9-8 lead into a commanding double-digit advantage. A 12-2 run, fueled by Heady’s shooting and defensive pressure, established a 21-10 margin. The Wildcats forced three turnovers during the surge, with Heady recording a steal that led to a Rouzan layup. South Carolina State struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Bethune-Cookman’s active defense, which generated 10 steals and blocked five shots.

South Carolina State was led by Christopher Parker’s 14 points. Cameron Clark added 12 points and a block, and Owen Bronston scored 11, but the Bulldogs shot poorly from the field and committed 17 turnovers, which the Wildcats converted into 23 points.

Bethune-Cookman’s lead ballooned to as many as 24 points in the second half. The Wildcats consistently answered any modest South Carolina State push with a scoring run, often punctuated by baskets from Morris or Rouzan. A late dunk by reserve Ariel Bland, who had four points, two assists and two blocks, pushed the margin to 78-59 before the final buzzer.

The game was a departure from recent form for both teams. Bethune-Cookman entered having lost three straight, including a 100-56 defeat at Indiana, while South Carolina State continued a difficult early-season schedule filled with road games against high-major opponents.

An announced crowd of 467 watched the Wildcats outperform pregame expectations. Bethune-Cookman was favored by 10.5 points, and the combined score of 139 fell well under the over/under line of 147.5.

Bethune-Cookman looks to build on the win when it travels to face Missouri on Dec. 14. South Carolina State continues its quest for a victory at Queens University of Charlotte on Dec. 12.
