Balanced Huskies Roll Past Lions in Hartford
HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The Connecticut Huskies, fresh off a marquee road victory earlier in the week, methodically dispatched a game but overmatched Texas A&M-Commerce team 83-59 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Friday night before a crowd of 10,244 at the XL Center.
The Huskies, improving to 8-1, used their significant size and depth advantage to control the paint and gradually pull away from the Lions, who fell to an even 4-4. The most important stretch of the game came late in the first half, when Connecticut turned a narrow lead into a comfortable double-digit cushion it would never relinquish.
After Texas A&M-Commerce’s Damian Garcia hit a 3-pointer to cut the Huskies’ lead to 20-17 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the opening period, Connecticut clamped down defensively. The Lions endured a scoring drought of nearly four minutes, managing only a single free throw. During that span, the Huskies engineered a 9-1 run, fueled by interior play and transition opportunities. Silas Demary Jr. converted a layup, Solo Ball threw down a dunk off a Jaylin Stewart assist, and Stewart himself scored on a driving layup and subsequent free throw. The surge pushed the lead to 29-18 and established a tone of defensive control that lasted the rest of the night.
Connecticut took a 38-27 lead into halftime and opened the second half with immediate force. Ball buried a 3-pointer on the first possession, and after a pair of Eric Reibe free throws, the Huskies’ lead ballooned to 16 points less than two minutes into the half. Texas A&M-Commerce, led by the determined play of Ronnie Harrison, never folded but could never mount a sustained threat to seriously challenge the Huskies’ command. Every Lion push was answered, often by Reibe in the lane or Ball on the perimeter, ensuring the margin never dipped below 12 points in the final 17 minutes.
Harrison, a 6-foot-8 forward from Forney, Texas, was a bright spot for the visitors, leading all scorers with 15 points in 25 minutes, adding two assists and a blocked shot. Garcia added 12 points and three assists for the Lions.
The Huskies, however, showcased the balanced attack that has become their hallmark. Ball, a guard from Leesburg, Virginia, led Connecticut with 14 points in just 21 minutes off the bench. Reibe, the 7-foot-1 center from Hannover, Germany, dominated the interior with 13 points and three blocks. Alex Karaban contributed 12 points, while Stewart chipped in nine points and Demary Jr. orchestrated the offense with a game-high five assists to go with eight points.
Connecticut’s defense was equally impactful, forcing 15 Lions turnovers and blocking seven shots, with Reibe and Josh Taylor of Texas A&M-Commerce each recording three denials. The Huskies also held a decisive rebounding advantage, particularly on the offensive glass, which led to 15 second-chance points.
The victory extends Connecticut’s strong start to the season, which includes a win at Kansas last Tuesday, as they now look ahead to a high-profile neutral-site clash with Florida next week in New York. Texas A&M-Commerce, which had won two straight entering the game, continues a challenging nonconference slate and will return home to host Central Arkansas on Sunday.
Interstat’s ELO system had given Connecticut a 99.90 percent probability to win, and the Huskies performed with the efficiency expected of a powerhouse against a transitioning Division I program. The game was defined not by a single, dramatic moment, but by Connecticut’s systematic and relentless execution, particularly during the pivotal first-half run that transformed a competitive contest into a controlled demonstration of their superior talent and depth.
