Akron Dominates Bucknell Behind Johnson, Lyles in High-Scoring Affair

AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Akron Zips dominated the Bucknell Bison 97-77 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.

A crowd of 1,508 watched the Zips improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Bison fell to 2-8.

Akron seized control from the opening tip and never relented, building a 49-36 halftime lead. The Zips shot a blistering 56.5% from the field for the game, compared to Bucknell’s 40.8%. While both teams found success from beyond the arc, Akron’s superior execution inside and ability to capitalize on mistakes proved decisive.

The Zips scored 40 points in the paint and converted 14 points off eight Bucknell turnovers. The Bison managed just 3 points off Akron’s five giveaways. Akron’s offensive rating of 138.7, scoring 97 points on just 70 possessions, underscored a night of highly efficient scoring.

Guard Tavari Johnson led all scorers with 23 points for Akron, adding five assists. Forward Amani Lyles was a force inside, contributing 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Evan Mahaffey added 10 points, and the Zips’ backcourt distribution was sharp, with Sharron Young dishing six assists and Shammah Scott adding five.

Bucknell was led by Quin Berger’s 18 points, all coming on six three-pointers. Jayden Williams scored 15 points and handed out five assists. Center Grgur Brcic added 11 points, but the Bison’s offense often stalled, registering only three total assists as a team against six turnovers forced by the active Akron defense.

The game’s trajectory was set early. After Brcic scored the game’s first basket for Bucknell, Akron responded with a 7-0 run and continued to apply pressure. A three-pointer from Johnson at the 17:43 mark gave Akron a 7-5 lead it would not surrender. The Zips extended their advantage to 12-7 shortly after following a technical foul on Berger, and a three-pointer from Johnson made it 19-12 with just over 12 minutes left in the half.

Bucknell stayed within range for much of the first half thanks to its three-point shooting, connecting on 7 of 19 attempts before the break. A three-pointer from Achile Spadone brought the Bison to within 31-28 with 6:53 remaining. Akron, however, answered with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a dunk from Mahaffey, to push the lead back to 10. The Zips closed the half on an 8-3 run, including a driving layup from Johnson just before the buzzer, to take a 13-point lead into the locker room.

Any hopes of a Bucknell comeback were extinguished in the opening minutes of the second half. Akron opened the period on a 15-6 run, featuring five points from Johnson and a dunk from Eric Mahaffey, to stretch the lead to 64-42 with 16:59 to play. The Zips’ lead ballooned to as many as 26 points midway through the half.

Bucknell’s offense, which finished with an offensive rating of 108.0, could not mount a sustained challenge. The Bison relied heavily on the three-pointer, attempting 37 for the game and making 14. Inside, Akron’s defense, which blocked three shots and altered many others, held firm. The Zips also won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding Bucknell 36-30 overall.

For Akron, the win continues a strong start to the season following a 105-81 victory over Milwaukee last Saturday. The Zips have now scored 97 or more points in four of their nine games. Bucknell has lost four straight, including a 101-72 defeat to Cornell on Sunday.

According to pregame metrics from Interstat, Akron was projected with a 95.4% probability to win. The Zips covered the spread as 20.5-point favorites. The total score of 174 points went over the closing over/under line of 161.5.

Bucknell returns home to face Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday. Akron hits the road for its next contest, traveling to face Tulane on Saturday.
