Siena at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Gavin Doty scored 21 points as Siena remained undefeated with a methodical 62-46 victory over Brown in a non-conference men’s basketball game on Friday night at Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Saints improved to 2-0 by controlling the game from the outset, building a 29-19 halftime lead and never letting the Bears mount a serious challenge after the break. Brown, playing its season opener, struggled offensively throughout the night, shooting just 29.3% from the field.

Siena’s defense set the tone, forcing 15 Brown turnovers and converting them into 15 points. The Saints also dominated inside, outscoring the Bears 38-20 in the paint and securing 13 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second-chance points.

Doty, a 6-foot-5 guard from Fulton, New York, was efficient in his 27 minutes, shooting 9 of 15 from the field. He was complemented by Tasman Goodrick, who nearly recorded a double-double with 8 points and 10 rebounds. Antonio Chandler added 9 points and 5 rebounds for the Saints.

Brown was led by N’famara Dabo, who finished with 6 points, 7 rebounds and a block. Jeremiah Jenkins contributed 4 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the Bears, who shot a dismal 4 of 24 from 3-point range.

The game was a stark contrast to pregame expectations, as statistical models had given Brown an 82% probability of victory, and the Bears had been installed as a 2-point favorite. The total score of 108 fell well under the over/under line of 147, highlighting the defensive struggle.

Siena’s offense, while not spectacular, was effective enough, posting an offensive rating of 91.9 points per 100 possessions compared to Brown’s anemic 66.9. The Saints overcame their own poor 3-point shooting, making just 1 of 14 from beyond the arc, by consistently attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line, where they attempted 22 shots.

The Saints will look to continue their early-season success when they travel to face Saint Bonaventure on Wednesday. Brown will try to rebound at home against Vermont on Sunday.

An announced crowd of 564 attended the game at the 2,800-seat Pizzitola Sports Center.
