Idaho State Holds Off San Diego Rally for Road Victory

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant first half and a frantic second-half comeback that fell just short, the Idaho State Bengals held off the San Diego Toreros 71-68 in a non-conference men’s basketball thriller Friday night at a sparsely attended Jenny Craig Pavilion.

A crowd of 781 watched as the Bengals built a commanding 18-point lead by halftime, only to see the Toreros storm back in the final period, closing the gap to a single possession in the game’s dying seconds. The victory pushed Idaho State’s early-season record to a perfect 2-0, while San Diego evened its mark at 1-1.

The narrative of the contest was a tale of two starkly different halves. Idaho State controlled the opening 20 minutes with precision and defensive intensity, taking a 34-25 lead into the locker room. The Bengals’ offense was efficient, while their defense stifled San Diego’s shooters, holding the Toreros to a paltry 25 first-half points.

However, the second half saw a complete reversal of momentum. San Diego, energized and desperate, came out of the break with renewed vigor. The Toreros erupted for 43 points in the final frame, relentlessly chipping away at the Bengals’ once-formidable advantage. Led by the backcourt duo of Juanse Gorosito and Adrian McIntyre, San Diego’s offense found its rhythm, driving to the basket and capitalizing on transition opportunities.

The Toreros’ surge turned the final minutes into a white-knuckle affair. With just over a minute remaining, San Diego had clawed their way to within a single possession. The tension peaked in the final 11 seconds when Idaho State’s Quin Patterson was fouled and sent to the free-throw line with his team clinging to a narrow lead. Patterson missed the first attempt but calmly sank the second, pushing the Bengals’ lead to three points.

San Diego had one final chance to force overtime. After a timeout to advance the ball, the Toreros inbounded to Adrian McIntyre, whose contested, step-back 3-point attempt from the wing rattled out as the final horn sounded, sealing the dramatic victory for the visiting Bengals.

Idaho State was led by a stellar performance from Connor Hollenbeck. The 6-foot-7 forward from Rapid City, South Dakota, was a model of consistency and clutch play, scoring a team-high 18 points while adding three assists and a critical block in 35 minutes of action. His ability to score both inside and from beyond the arc, including several key baskets to stem San Diego’s momentum, was instrumental in the win.

Providing crucial support was guard Gus Etchison of Arcadia, Indiana. Despite standing just 5-foot-11, Etchison provided a vital spark, scoring 15 points and dishing out three assists in only 17 minutes off the bench. His quickness and scoring punch in limited action were a key component of the Bengals’ offensive attack.

For San Diego, the valiant comeback effort was spearheaded by Juanse Gorosito. The guard from Santa Fe, Argentina, logged a game-high 36 minutes, leading all scorers with 15 points and orchestrating the offense with five assists. His backcourt mate, Adrian McIntyre from Sylmar, California, added 11 points, with nine of them coming during the Toreros’ furious second-half rally.

The Bengals also received a significant contribution from Australian big man Caleb Van De Griend. The 6-foot-8 center provided a strong interior presence, scoring 13 points, including several key free throws, and recording a block in 25 minutes of play.

San Diego’s Toneari Lane of Atlanta, Georgia, also finished with 11 points, all in the second half, as part of the Toreros’ offensive resurgence. Tim Moore of Houston, Texas, added eight points and a block, providing energy off the bench.

The game’s statistical profile underscored the nature of the contest. Idaho State’s first-half efficiency allowed them to build their large lead, while San Diego’s improved shooting and aggressive play after halftime fueled their near-comeback. The contest defied the pregame expectations, as San Diego had been installed as a six-point favorite, and the combined point total of 139 fell well under the projected over/under line of 153.5.

With the hard-fought road victory, Idaho State now looks ahead to a quick turnaround, facing San Diego State on the road this Sunday. San Diego, meanwhile, will aim to regroup before hosting Idaho next Wednesday.
