Motorygin, Dynamo Moscow edge Amur in penalty-filled KHL contest
MOSCOW (Interstat) — Maxim Motorygin made 28 saves and Dynamo Moscow held off Amur Khabarovsk 2-1 in a Kontinental Hockey League game Wednesday at VTB Ice Palace in Russia. The announced attendance was 7,055. Dynamo is now 8-14, while Amur is 10-9. Amur entered on a two-game winning streak, while Dynamo had lost four of its previous six games, including overtime setbacks to Avangard and Lokomotiv. Amur had also won the earlier meeting between the teams this season by a 4-0 score.
Dynamo opened the scoring late in the first period when Pavel Shen scored his sixth goal of the season at 12:48, with assists from Maxim Letunov and Bulat Shafigullin. The goal came after Amur’s Yaroslav Dyominsky was penalized for tripping at 12:01. Amur answered at 17:33 when Vitaly Abramov scored his sixth goal, tying the game at 1. Abramov finished with one goal, four shots on goal and two penalty minutes. Shen recorded one goal, four shots and two penalty minutes. Earlier in the period, Dynamo’s Artyom Bondar was called for tripping at 4:23, Amur’s Abramov was called for too many players on the ice at 5:46, and Dynamo’s Artyom Shvets-Rogovoi was called for slashing at 13:38. The first period ended with the teams level.
The second period was heavily penalized. Amur’s Konstantin Lukin was sent off for tripping at 21:32, and Yegor Voronkov followed for holding at 22:29. Matching roughing calls to Shvets-Rogovoi and Amur’s Oleg Li at 25:21 preceded Abramov’s hooking penalty at 25:31. Dynamo’s Luka Profaca was called for slashing at 29:10. Dynamo took advantage at 30:34 when Igor Martynov scored his second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner, with assists from Nikita V. Novikov and Shvets-Rogovoi. Martynov had one goal and five shots. Shvets-Rogovoi had one assist and four penalty minutes. Novikov added his first assist of the season. Letunov and Shafigullin each had one assist and two shots, with Letunov’s assist his third and Shafigullin’s his eighth. Later in the period, Amur’s Dyominsky was called for hooking at 32:18, and Dynamo’s Shen received a boarding minor at 33:00. Motorygin protected the lead and finished with 28 saves on 29 shots for the win. Dynamo’s Daniil Pylenkov had four shots, and Daniil Davydov had two shots and one hit. Dynamo carried a 2-1 lead into the third.
Amur pressed for an equalizer in the third but could not solve Motorygin. Penalties to Dynamo’s Nikita Korostelyov for tripping at 41:00 and Mario Patalakha for roughing at 43:32, plus Amur’s Dmitry Kostenko for interference at 43:32, broke up the late flow. The teams combined for 15 minor penalties, and Amur’s Dyominsky and Abramov and Dynamo’s Shvets-Rogovoi each took two minor penalties. Dynamo killed off the remaining penalties and held on. Dynamo held Amur scoreless over the final 20 minutes and protected the one-goal lead. Amur could not convert its late pressure into a tying goal. Dynamo’s penalty kill survived a busy afternoon and sealed the win. Amur had won its previous game, while Dynamo had dropped an overtime decision in its previous outing. Motorygin, who had stopped 14 of 15 shots in a recent win at Lada Togliatti and 23 of 25 in a recent loss to Sibir Novosibirsk, was the top star for Dynamo. Amur next faces Ak Bars, while Dynamo next faces Dinamo Minsk.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Amur 3, Dynamo 1. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Dynamo with a 62.3 percent probability to win. The over/under line was 4.5, and the total score of 3 was listed as going over that line.
