Berdin stops 37 shots, Sibir rallies past Barys 3‑2
ASTANA (Interstat) — Mikhail Berdin stopped 37 shots, and Sibir Novosibirsk scored twice in the third period to rally for a 3-2 victory over Barys Astana in a Kontinental Hockey League game Monday at Barys Arena. The announced attendance was 9,785. Sibir improved to 5 wins and 10 losses, while Barys fell to 8 wins and 6 losses.
Barys opened with an early push, but the home side was called for the game’s first penalty when Hunter Shepard received a minor for displacing the goal frame at 10:47 of the first period. Sibir needed little time to take advantage. Stepan Nikulin scored his third goal of the season at 11:38, with Taylor Beck and Darren Dietz assisting. Barys answered at 13:24 when Mason Morelli scored, with Logan Day and Jake Massie setting up the goal. The home side then moved ahead at 18:09 on Kirill Savitsky’s first goal of the season, assisted by Justin Bailey and Daniyar Samat.
Trailing after one period, Sibir had to manage its discipline in the second. Day was called for tripping at 20:12, and Nikulin received a high-sticking minor at 34:48. Berdin kept the visitors close through the middle frame, turning aside repeated Barys chances. He finished the game with 37 saves on 39 shots, the top performance for Sibir. Morelli ended with a goal, three shots and one hit for Barys. Bailey had one assist, six shots and two hits. Savitsky recorded a goal on his only shot. Day added an assist, three shots and two penalty minutes, while Massie contributed one assist.
The third period turned on a Barys penalty. Semyon Simonov was called for high sticking at 50:42, and Sibir capitalized 16 seconds later. Beck scored at 50:58, with Dietz and Nikulin drawing assists, tying the game at 2. Sibir then completed the comeback at 55:36 when Pavel Tyutnev scored from Mikhail Orlov and Nikulin. Barys pressed for an equalizer over the final minutes, but Berdin and the Sibir defense held firm.
Sibir’s special teams made the difference. The visitors scored twice on the power play, first after Shepard’s penalty and again after Simonov’s third-period infraction. Barys, meanwhile, could not convert on Nikulin’s high-sticking minor. The Barys penalty kill had no answer for Sibir’s puck movement on the winning sequence, as Dietz and Nikulin set up Beck before Nikulin helped create Tyutnev’s eventual winner.
Nikulin finished with one goal, two assists, two shots and two penalty minutes. Beck added one goal, one assist and four shots. Tyutnev had one goal and three shots. Dietz contributed two assists, one shot and one hit. Berdin’s victory came after recent outings in which he made 34 saves in a win over Salavat Yulaev Ufa and 31 saves in a loss at Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk earlier this season. The 6-foot-2, 183-pound goaltender was the anchor for a Sibir team that improved its record with a road win against a Barys club that had been strong at home.
Sibir entered the game looking to build on a 2-1 road win at Traktor Chelyabinsk and had split its previous four games. Barys came in having won three of four, including a 5-1 home victory over Avangard Omsk and a 4-3 shootout win at Spartak Moscow. Earlier this season, Barys had routed Sibir 7-1 in Astana, but the rematch followed a different script. The loss dropped Barys to 8-6. Sibir moved to 5-10 and will next visit Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Barys will host Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg in its next game. The teams are scheduled to meet again when Barys visits Sibir later in the month.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Barys 2, Sibir 1. Interstat’s ELO system had given Sibir a 55.3 percent probability to win.
