Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Rolls Past Dinamo Minsk With Six Goals
YAROSLAVL (Interstat) — Maxim Shalunov, a 6-foot-3, 212-pound forward, recorded one goal, one assist, nine shots on goal and eight hits, while Daniil Isayev, a 5-foot-11, 159-pound goaltender, stopped 24 of 25 shots as Lokomotiv Yaroslavl defeated Dinamo Minsk 6-1 in a Kontinental Hockey League game at Arena 2000 on Saturday. The home victory improved Lokomotiv to 11-3 this season. Dinamo Minsk dropped to 5-9. Attendance at Arena 2000 was 8,104. Lokomotiv’s win came against a Dinamo Minsk team that had won the most recent meeting between the clubs.
Lokomotiv seized control early. Yegor Surin opened the scoring at 11:22 of the first period, with Andrei Sergeyev and Rushan Rafikov collecting assists. Georgy Ivanov doubled the lead at 14:25, assisted by Alexander Radulov and Nikita V. Cherepanov. The two early goals put Dinamo Minsk on its heels and forced the visitors to chase the game. Dinamo Minsk briefly steadied itself in the second period. Alex Limoges scored at 30:27, with Christopher Tierney assisting, to cut the deficit to 2-1. That goal gave Dinamo Minsk some momentum, but it did not last.
Lokomotiv answered with a decisive third-period burst. Rafikov restored a two-goal cushion at 45:45, scoring just after Dinamo Minsk was penalized for too many players on the ice. Shalunov made it 4-1 at 48:58, assisted by Sergeyev and Rafikov. Radulov stretched the lead at 56:32, with Kirill D. Yemelyanov and Alexei Bereglazov picking up assists. Artur Kayumov completed the scoring at 59:13, assisted by Surin and Shalunov. The late flurry turned a competitive game into a rout and highlighted Lokomotiv’s depth.
Surin, a 6-foot-1, 192-pound forward, finished with one goal, one assist, three shots on goal and three hits. Rafikov, a 6-foot-2, 201-pound defenseman, added one goal, two assists and four shots. Radulov, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound forward, had one goal, one assist, five shots and one hit. Ivanov, a 6-foot, 187-pound forward, recorded one goal, three shots and four hits. Kayumov, a 5-foot-11, 168-pound forward, had one goal, four shots and one hit. Yemelyanov, a 6-foot, 176-pound forward, contributed one assist and three shots, while Bereglazov, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound defenseman, had one assist. Sergeyev, a 5-foot-10, 243-pound defenseman, finished with two assists, one shot and two penalty minutes. Isayev earned the win in net, stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced.
Shalunov’s nine shots and eight hits set the tone for Lokomotiv. The forward had been relatively quiet in his most recent game, recording one hit, but he was involved throughout Saturday’s win. His goal and assist helped Lokomotiv pull away after Dinamo Minsk had drawn within a goal. The home side also managed the game well after taking the lead, limiting Dinamo Minsk’s chances and capitalizing on penalties.
Penalties affected the flow of the game. Lokomotiv’s Daniil Tesanov was called for tripping in the first period. Sergeyev served an interference minor in the second. Dinamo Minsk’s Joshua Brook was penalized for holding later in the second. In the third, Vladimir Alistrov was called for too many players on the ice, and Nikita Pyshkailo was sent off for holding. Rafikov scored shortly after Alistrov’s penalty, a sequence that helped Lokomotiv take full control.
Dinamo Minsk’s record fell to 5-9 after the loss. The visitors had entered the game looking to build on a recent home win over SKA Saint Petersburg, but they could not contain Lokomotiv’s attack. Lokomotiv improved to 11-3 and continued a strong start to the season. The home team’s scoring depth was evident, with six different players finding the net and several skaters recording multi-point games. The victory also avenged Lokomotiv’s earlier loss to Dinamo Minsk.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Lokomotiv 5, Dinamo Minsk 1. Its ELO system gave Lokomotiv a 74 percent probability to win before the game.
