Fedotov, Spartak shut out Sochi in KHL road win

NIZHNEIMERETINSKAYA BUKHTA, Russia (Interstat) — Ivan Fedotov stopped all 22 shots he faced, and Spartak Moscow scored once in the first period and once in the third to beat HC Sochi 2-0 on Friday in a Kontinental Hockey League game at Bolshoy Ice Dome. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound Fedotov earned the win in his 22-save shutout. Spartak improved to 7 wins and 7 losses this season, while Sochi fell to 2 wins and 11 losses. A crowd of 5,511 watched the visitors secure the road victory.

Spartak grabbed the lead quickly. Alexander Vl. Belyayev scored 1:14 into the game, converting after assists from Yegor Filin and Joseph Keane. It was Belyayev’s seventh goal of the season, and the 5-foot-11, 187-pound forward finished with six shots on goal and one hit. The early goal set the tone for a Spartak team that controlled much of the play despite taking a few penalties. Keane was sent off for slashing at 13:19 of the first period, but Sochi could not capitalize. Sochi’s Matvei Guskov took a hooking penalty at 19:10, giving Spartak late power-play time in the opening period. Spartak led after the first.

The second period featured penalties from both sides. Spartak’s Mikhail Maltsev was whistled for tripping at 22:58. Sochi’s Yaroslav Belyakov was called for throwing the puck outside the playing area at 26:32. Fedotov and the Spartak defense held firm, killing off the Maltsev minor and keeping Sochi off the score sheet. Keane, a 6-foot, 185-pound defenseman, contributed two assists in the win to go with three shots on goal, two penalty minutes and one hit. Dmitry Vishnevsky, listed at 5-foot-10 and 183 pounds, recorded four shots on goal and one hit. Yegor Varyushkin had two shots and one hit, while Ivan M. Ryabov added one shot and three hits. Danil Pivchulin later finished with one assist, two shots and two hits.

Sochi’s Ilya Fedotov was called for hooking at 42:26. Spartak then doubled its lead early in the third period when Alexander Galchenyuk scored at 42:44 elapsed in the game, with assists from Pivchulin and Keane. The 6-foot, 194-pound forward’s goal gave the visitors a 2-0 cushion and stood as the final scoring play of the night. Galchenyuk ended with one goal, two shots on goal and two hits. Sochi had several chances to answer, including power-play opportunities, but Fedotov turned aside every attempt. Alexander Khokhlachyov was assessed a hooking minor at 49:37 and Viktor Baldayev received a holding penalty at 51:58. The home side could not solve Fedotov during those chances.

Fedotov’s performance was the centerpiece for Spartak. He stopped all 22 shots he faced for the win, following recent starts that included a victory over Sochi earlier this season. Fedotov had 18 saves on 20 shots in that earlier meeting, 22 saves on 24 shots in a loss to Metallurg Magnitogorsk and 15 saves on 19 shots in a loss to Traktor Chelyabinsk. Filin added one assist and one hit. Maltsev, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound forward, finished with two shots on goal, two penalty minutes and four hits. Spartak’s win followed an earlier victory over Sochi this season, a 5-2 road result, and continued Sochi’s difficult start. Sochi has now lost 11 of its first 13 games, while Spartak evened its record at 7-7.

Spartak returns to the road to face Amur Khabarovsk in its next game, followed by a matchup at Admiral Vladivostok. Sochi will visit Ak Bars Kazan in its next matchup, then return home to face Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. The game was played at Bolshoy Ice Dome in Nizhneimeretinskaya Bukhta, Russia.
